Bowman to Ride Catkins in Dane Ripper Stakes 2014

One of Sydney’s best jockeys Hugh Bowman is in Brisbane this Saturday for Stradbroke Handicap Day at Eagle Farm where one of his best rides will be aboard smart mare Catkins in the Dane Ripper Stakes 2014.

The Chris Waller-trained daughter of Dubawi is one of 23 fillies and mares nominated for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m).

She’s joined in the entries by her dual Group 1 winning stablemate Red Tracer who won the race last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival on way to her victory in the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).

The Tattersall’s Tiara, held this year on June 21, is again on the agenda for Red Tracer but she’s unlikely to go to it via the Dane Ripper.

Instead Waller will look to add to her value as a broodmare running her in the $1.36 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on Saturday, Red Tracer last seen running third in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) in Sydney on April 19.

Waller though is still nicely represented in the Dane Ripper by four-year-old grey Catkins who also is first-up for the festival here having run sixth in the Queen Of The Turf.

Unlucky not to break through at elite level with a Group 1 win of her own, Catkins still caught the eye with three Group victories most recently in the G2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on Slipper Day.

In all five of her 2014 runs Catkins has been ridden by Bowman who heads north to retain his association with her in the Dane Ripper.

Like Red Tracer, Catkins will back-up after Stradbroke Handicap Day with a run in the Tattersall’s Tiara 2014 where Waller will be shooting for a quinella in the season’s final Group 1 race.

While he’s without a ride in the Stradbroke on Saturday, Bowman still has two other Group 1 rides on the card.

In the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) he partners with up-and-comer Rudy coming off a third behind favoruite for Saturday Vilanova in the Grand Prix Stakes, and the John O’Shea-trained colt Mohave in the $500,000 Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) for the juveniles.

All the Eagle Farm race fields for the weekend are due out on Wednesday and will be published here at so stay tuned.
