Eagle Farm Best Bets – 2014 Queensland Oaks Day

The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival action moves to Eagle Farm Racecourse for first of the state’s premier track’s three big Group 1 meetings – Queensland Oaks Day 2014.

There’s a top eight-race Eagle Farm program scheduled too with racing kicking off at 11:45am (AEST) and coming to a close at 4:20pm.

Punters are treated to four Group races on the program, plus three listed features as well, with the headliner jumping as Race 7 at 3:40pm – the $400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m).

Arabian Gold is $2.50 favourite to take it out from the inside alley, earlier week doubts regarding her shoe troubles now well and truly cleared.

Other highlights on the card include the $350,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) at 3:00pm where a field of talented three-year-olds will face off including a number of 2014 Stradbroke Handicap hopes and the $250,000 Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) earlier in the day where a small but classy field of seven stayers comes head-to-head.

There are showers in Brisbane on Friday and rain predicted late on Saturday that could affect the current Good (3) track rating at Eagle Farm.

So who should you get on and off in betting?

To help sort the pretenders from the genuine Queensland Oaks Day contenders below are our Eagle Farm best bets of the day for you to clean out the bookies at Ladbrokes.com.au.

In The Big One (Race 7) – 2014 Queensland Oaks

#1 Arabian Gold ($2.50)

It always seems dull backing a short-priced favourite in a big 18-starter field but this year’s Oaks top fancy is deserving of her spot heading the betting and we’re not backing against David Vandyke’s in-form filly even with the shoe setback. She’s won her last three, including two Sydney Group 3s, coming off a Group 2 The Roses win at Doomben that’s proved the form line to follow for the Oaks over the past decade. Barrier one is going to see her slot into a prime position ready to settle then strike over the closing 400m like she did last time out and get a distance some are saying she’ll be sus at.

Better Than Bank Interest (Race 3) – 2014 Eagle Farm Cup

#2 Akzar ($2.50)

There’s only seven in this year’s Eagle Farm Cup field and with rain around Akzar at $2.50 looks a really nice bet. They thrived in the mud winning the Warrnambool Cup by 10 lengths too back, then in the Doomben Cup dropped down to 2000m but still caught the eye with their third to Streama. Up in distance and down in class for this, in gate three with Brad Rawiller riding, lots to love and the rain is only going to help their cause.

Best Upset To Win (Race 6) – 2014 Queensland Guineas

#1 Dothraki ($7)

Betting is led here by Hucklebuck ($4.60) and last start Fred Best Classic winner Havana ($5.50) but we love the form and odds on the Gerald Ryan-trained Dothraki who gets barrier one and Nash Rawiller – tick, tick. Gate suits and so should the distance, the Mossman colt looking to bounce back and return to winning form having taken out the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) two back before their Fred Best third. Rain is to their advantage, 1400m winner in a Listed Flemington race in the spring and should prove nice value.

Best Roughie To Place (Race 7) – 2014 Queensland Oaks

#15 Sister Souss ($41)

We’re back to the Oaks where, although John Thompson’s Husson filly was just outside our Queensland Oaks Trifecta Tip we think at this juicy price she’s worth looking at for the exotics. She has improvement in her off a Doomben Roses fourth when beaten four lengths, more distance looks up her alley and she’s every chance on Slow ground.

Last Of The Day (Race 8) – 2014 QTC Cup

#3 Dances On Stars ($6.50)

To end the day on a high we’re tipping another upset with market mover Dances On Stars to give Sydney’s Gerald Ryan a nice win. They’ve drawn to perfection in barrier three, won the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1300m) two back in the wet at the Gold Coast, should like Eagle Farm’s roomer track and get the sting out of the ground here. Fourth in the BRC Sprint last time out at Doomben, improve off that going back to the 1300m.
