Rounding out the eight-race Queensland Oaks Day program at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday is the QTC Cup 2014, betting tips and selections for the handicap clash listed right here.
Due to jump at 4:20pm (AEST), this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Magic Millions QTC Cup (1300m) features a field of 14 hopefuls led by Sacred Star at $4 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Prepared in New Zealand by Tony Pike, the Flying Spur four-year-old is an Aussie expat previously raced by Chris Waller who is back home hoping to earn a start in the $1.36 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) Saturday week.
Currently sitting 28th on the Stradbroke Handicap ballot however the pressure is on Sacred Star to win the QTC Cup in their first run since a second to Viadana in the Group 1 NRM Sprint (1400m) back home on February 8.
It’s a pretty open QTC Cup betting affair then with four other single figure fancies.
Following the favourite at $6 is Waller’s Written Tycoon five-year-old Masthead followed by Hot Snitzel for Gerald Ryan, their nicely-drawn stable mate Dances On Stars in barrier three and Bennetta all paying $6.50 to win.
So with the bookies having such a hard time separating the chances here, will the favourite get the job done or will there be an upset QTC Cup result to finish off Brisbane racing on Saturday?
#3 Dances On Stars ($6.50)
Early money coming for Ryan’s in-form Snitzel four-year-old who we rate a top chance from their nice barrier four draw here. They carry 56.5kg which is one kilo more than the weight they had when fourth to Stradbroke Handicap-bound River Lad in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) on May 17, but 2.5kg less than their Group 1 performing stable mate Hot Snitzel. Come off some consistent form having run top four in their past four runs, including a Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1300m) victory at the Gold Coast on May 3 in the mud. Rain around ahead of and on Saturday too so they are a top chance (Heavy form: 4-1-1-1).
#5 Sacred Star ($4)
Are first-up here but their form back home around New Zealand’s top runners has been outstanding earning a trip back to Oz. Have the most to lose as they shoot for a Stradbroke start, drawn well for the attempt too in gate four with Timothy Bell to ride. Get in on 54.5kg which looks very manageable as they carried 59kg back in February in their most recent run over the 1400m. Group 1 form in NZ up to a mile but first-up over this distance on the back of a Doomben trial run to get their fitness up look good and can handle the give out of the ground if the rain stays around.
#9 Doubtfilly ($15)
Adds some nice value to the QTC Cup trifecta here at double figures, Stuart Kendrick’s Sunshine Coast-trained Not A Single Doubt mare with three weeks between runs having last finished third to Pure Purrfection in the Listed Bribie Handicap (1100m) at Doomben. Get more ground here which they will appreciate but it’s the wet weather that works to their advantage best with the four-year-old having won two from three, and run third in the other, attempts on Heavy tracks.
