Jumbo Prince Heads 2014 The Phoenix Field

Michael Nolan’s Toowoomba-based youngster comes to town on Saturday with Jumbo Prince a genuine chance to extend their winning streak with a city victory in the 2014 The Phoenix at Eagle Farm.

Kicking off Black Type racing on Queensland Oaks Day, this year’s $100,000 Listed KRA Busan The Phoenix (1400m) runs as Race 2 at 12:25pm and has drawn a big field of 16 acceptors.

Of the 16 two-year-olds in the mix, one of the top rated is Outback Prince colt Jumbo Prince shooting for their third win on the trot.

Yet to finish out of the money in their four career runs they’ve won back-to-back races at home this month, most recently a Class 1 over 1200m last Saturday night at Clifford Park.

They’re on the short back-up and are up in class but have earned their shot at this, the Phoenix having been on trainer Nolan’s agenda for some time.

“I’ve had a plan all along for this horse and so far, so good,” Nolan told The Chronicle after the horse’s last win.

“He’s been a good horse right from the start.

“He’s a foolproof little horse who has matured well from where he was six months ago.

“We’ll head to Brisbane and test the water with him now.

“It’s going to be a lot harder down there but we want to give him his opportunity.

“It would be good if he can go on and win a nice race now.”

The only major setback though could be their wide barrier 14 draw, Timothy Bell jumping on.

There are four other last start winners in this year’s The Phoenix field including the Ray McCall-trained Walk To The Bar who has drawn much better in barrier three.

After two second place finishes to kick off their career in April, the Sunshine Coast-based All Bar One gelding enjoyed a trip home on May 18 where they got a Heavy track to win over 1200m in an effort they’ll be out to repeat against better class here.

Also coming off some nice lead-up runs are then the likes of Stuart Kendrick’s Thief Of Hearts (barrier two) and the Les Ross-trained Kelvin The Kruel out in the extreme outside barrier.

Show A Heart colt Thief Of Hearts debuted on May 17 in the Listed Dalrello Stakes (1200m) finishing a brave second, albeit beaten two and a quarter lengths, by Pinch River.

They get a chance to win their own stakes race second-up then with the Rob Heathcote-trained Pinch River not backing up.

Kelvin The Kruel also comes via the Dalrello having finished just a quarter length away again in third when also drawn in double digits.

Last weekend’s Group 1 Doomben 10,000 winning trainer Tony Gollan meanwhile will be represented here by Fixation having just their second career start after a third on debut at Ipswich last week.

Others in the mix include the Kelso Wood-trained Stratum filly Elitist for Chris Munce in barrier five and Hollywood Barbie one wide in gate six.

Elitist comes into this on the back of a close third, beaten under a half length by Tales Of Fashion in the Listed Lancaster Stakes (1200m) back on BTC Cup Day.

Hollywood Barbie meanwhile also ran in the Lancaster but finished a disappointing 12th, four lengths off the winner, which they’ll be out to atone for here.
