Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
After only just announcing plans to head to Queensland for a shot at next month’s 2014 Tattersall’s Tiara at Eagle Farm with Lonhspresso, trainer Darren Weirhas changed the mare’s lead-up assignment.
Lonhro four-year-old Lonhspresso earned talks of a Group 1 run in Brisbane on June 21 after her impressive last-to-first victory in the Listed The Straight Six down the 1200m at Flemington last weekend.
She caught the eye after coming from barrier 13 of 14 in the sprint showdown, displaying a lovely late burst of speed to run down Le Bonsir for her fourth career win at start number 10.
It was a run that has Weir believing Lonhspresso, a Group 2 winner in Adelaide last autumn during her three-year-old season, capable of stepping up to better company in the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).
Leading up to the Tattersall’s Tiara Weir originally planned to send her to Brisbane next week for a run in the $200,000 Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) on Stradbroke Handicap Day.
Weir has decided instead however to race her Friday week at Swan Hill in the $100,000 Golden Topaz (1200m), forgoing her chance to run at Eagle Farm under race conditions before the Tiara.
After the Golden Topaz, Lonhspresso will then have her final serious hit-out at home on the Tuesday before flying to the Sunshine State on Wednesday night, June 18.
The change of program is to ensure the lightly-raced mare arrives on Tatt’s Tiara Day at her peak ready to make her Group 1 debut according to managing owner Darren Dance.
“There’s only one goal and that’s the Tatt’s Tiara so we have to map out the best way to get her there at the peak of her powers,” Dance told Racing Victoria.
“She’s a horse that really likes her routine.
“We’re just worried if we take her up there and run her in the Dane Ripper she’s up there for another fortnight which leaves the possibility of her going off her feed and lightening off for the Tatt’s Tiara.
“Given she’s already a Group 2 winner, all we really want to do is run top three in a Group 1 to enhance her value.”
The Golden Topaz has produced a number of good types over the years including Morphettville-based Riziz who ran third in this year’s Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) behind Stradbroke Handicap hope Smokin’ Joey.
Riziz also ran in last weekend’s The Straight Six but could only manage to finish four lengths away 10th to Lonhspresso who is sure to jump favourite in the Golden Topaz next start.
