Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Racing Queensland has released the Stradbroke Handicap 2014 order of entry ahead of Saturday week’s classic at Eagle Farm Racecourse with a number of livewire chance on the cusp of a start.
There are officially four horses sitting equal first being exempt from ballot for this year’s $1.36 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1200m) on June 7.
One of those however is already ruled out as a non-acceptor with trainer Robert Heathcote to spell triple Group 1 champion Buffering ahead of a spring return.
The son of Mossman, third in the weekend’s Group 1 Doomben 10,000, was the 59kg topweight for the Straddie too meaning weights will be raised half a kilo.
That will leave Doomben 10,000 winner Spirit Of Boom for young local horseman Tony Gollan as the 58kg topweight, the Sequalo six-year-old also exempt from ballot from the Stradbroke.
The other two gallopers at the top of the order of entry are then BTC Cup winner Famous Seamus (55.5kg up to 55kg) who backed up to run ninth in the 10,000 and the Wez Hunter-trained Smokin’ Joey.
Mornington-based Encosta De Lago six-year-old Smokin’ Joey (55kg up to 55.5kg) won the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide last start as a $41 roughie.
They are at $21 in the latest Stradbroke Handicap odds and performed well when third in a Cranbourne trial over 800m on Monday morning.
Stradbroke Handicap betting is led by Ciaron Maher’s smart young filly Srikandi ($4.60) who took her record to six wins from seven starts in the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) on Saturday.
She’s still yet to be officially nominated for the Stradbroke so doesn’t appear on the order of entry, but is expected to get in on the minimum.
Next best in betting are then Rebel Dane ($6) and the aforementioned Spirit Of Boom ($6.50) who will be looking to become the seventh Stradbroke Handicap winner in the past 11 years to come via the Doomben 10,000.
Rebel Dane (56kg up to 56.5kg) meanwhile is also well assured of a start in the capacity 18-starter Stradbroke Handicap field sitting sixth on the ballot with Red Tracer fifth, or fifth and fourth with Buffering out of consideration.
Gary Portelli’s California Dane four-year-old had their debut Brisbane start in the 10,000 for a luckless fourth beaten under a length in an effort they’re sure to improve on when getting to the roomier Eagle Farm track.
The Chris Waller-trained Red Tracer (55.5kg up to 56kg) meanwhile is a $12 chance to win and add to her Tattersall’s Tiara Group 1 last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
Waller is also assured of representation from Catkins (8th up to 7th) who will still get in on only 54kg, the Dubawi mare looking to improve on her last start sixth in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) in Sydney last month.
Stable mate Arinosa then was originally the 19th horse but gets a shot in the first 18 now with ‘The Buff’ withdrawn, the Dash For Cash grey an out of form $81 roughie.
Other notable hopes inside the current Stradbroke order of entry include Darley-owned Knoydart (18th to 17th) coming off a Doomben 10,000 fifth, 10,000 runner-up and half-brother to the winner Temple Of Boom (10th up to 9th), and Sunshine Coast-trained River Lad (12th to 11th) in the mix after their Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) earlier in the month.
Another noteworthy addition assured of a run should they accept is 2012 Thousand Guineas winner Commanding Jewel (13th up to 12th) with 52.5kg.
Leon Corsten’s now four-year-old trailed at Cranbourne today and is making tracks ahead of a possible Brisbane return off a 10 month injury-enforced break.
She’s more likely to bypass the Stradbroke however and go directly into the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on June 21 should she be ready.
Some gallopers high up the Stradbroke Handicap odds sweating on a start meanwhile include Phillip Stokes’ Adelaide raider Hucklebuck ($13) who is 35th and last start Group 3 Fred Best Classic winner Havana ($16) right down in 57th spot.
Both three-year-olds however face off this weekend in the final race offering a Stradbroke Handicap ballot exemption, the $350,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m).
Stradbroke Handicap 2014 first acceptances and final late entries close this Wednesday, the field out the following week, so stay tuned.
