Spirit Of Boom Chasing Maiden Doomben Success in 10,000

Queensland-based trainer Tony Gollan is confident stable star Spirit Of Boom will break his drought at Doomben Racecourse this weekend and win the featured Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) after working well and drawing a favourable gate at Wednesday’s barrier draw.

Confirmed to be partnered by talented jockey Michael Rodd this weekend, Gollan told AAP he believes the allocation of barrier 2 should play right into the strengths of Spirit Of Boom in the Doomben 10,000.

“The way the draw has panned out, I think he will get the perfect sit on them,” Gollan said.

“I can even see the leading pack breaking away.

“Michael should be able to just sit behind them and get a cart into the race; maybe event from my other runner Temple Of Boom.”

Breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing when pipping Fontelina on the line in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 21st, Gollan said he has no doubt the Sequalo entire will handle the step up to 1350 metres for this first time this preparation.

“It doesn’t look that way on paper but some of his best runs have been at 1350m,” Gollan added.

“A couple of times he has been caught deep but still finished close up over the 1350m.”

Claiming an impressive eight victories and 20 places from 50 competitive starts so far, Spirit Of Boom has arguably returned to the track in career-best form this season; finishing second to the world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee in both the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) and Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) prior to his William Reid triumph.

Returning to his native Brisbane is similarly impressive form, Spirit Of Boom was unlucky to finish just off the pace of stable mate Temple Of Boom when hitting line the hard in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) on April 26th before once again finishing just in the red of Famous Seamus in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) last time out.

Confirmed for a proceeding appearance in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 7th before returning to the spelling paddock, Spirit Of Boom is currently sole occupant of the third line of betting for success in the 2014 Doomben 10,000 at a quote of $4.80.

The standout performer of the 2014 spring, Buffering is outright favourite to claim the 2014 Doomben 10,000 crown at even $4 odds, ahead of Rebel Dane ($4.60).
