The Doomben Cup 2018 takes centre stage in...
In-form local Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan is gearing up for a big day at Doomben on Saturday including saddling up the favourite in the Grand Prix Stakes 2014 with Amexed.
Fourteen three-year-olds remain engaged to face off in this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Mullins Lawyers Grand Prix Stakes (2200m), running as Doomben 10,000 Day Race 7 at 3:05pm (AEST), following the early scratching of #7 Takewing.
Heading the current betting markets for the 2014 Queensland Derby lead-up is Pentire gelding Amexed at a quote of $4.
Drawn nicely in barrier three with Michael Rodd to ride the up-and-comer has won their past two on the trot backing up from a Sunshine Coast victory over the mile to beat home Kiwi filly Telepathic in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben on May 10.
They face a similar field of rivals this weekend but are at far shorter odds than the juicy $17 they won the Rough Habit at.
Very close second pick for Saturday at $4.20 is then Telepathic with the bookies predicting the same quinella as in the Rough Habit.
A top fancy for the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 7, the Mossman filly debuted down under in that race and are now looking to return to their winning form ahead of the big Group 1 test.
Also at single figures in Grand Prix Stakes betting are four other chances:
- #3 Glorious Lad ($7) – Shaune Ritchie-trained New Zealander also had their first run down under in the Rough Habit when third, bookies tipping that form to stand up in the Grand Prix, Group 1 placed back home when third in the NZ Derby, that form franked with runner-up Rising Romance winning the ATC Oaks in Sydney, will appreciate step up in distance here
- #6 Pinstripe Lane ($7) – Pins colt prepared in Victoria by Troy Corstens, won their last start over 1900m at Rosehill on May 10 but is up in class here, third in the Moonee Valley vase last year before their Victoria Derby 13th but likely to have come on since then
- #9 Auberge ($7.50) – John O’Shea-trained Street Cry gelding is another in a notable class rise, won at Kembla Grange at the end of April in a Class 1 but that was over the mile and a half so proven at the distance and set to do well here
- #2 Rudy ($9) – Rails run for jockey Hugh Bowman here aboard Helen Page’s Gold Coast galloper who is another coming via the Rough Habit having run three lengths away fifth when up from a mile (Gunsynd third) the start before
