Shoreham Heads Andrew Ramsden Stakes 2014 Field

This Saturday in Melbourne punters are treated to a double shot of Black Type racing action including the 2014 Andrew Ramsden Stakes where local hope Shoreham is the top rated acceptor.

The Reset four-year-old is one of a dozen stayers facing off in this year’s $150,000 Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m) which, like the famous Melbourne Cup, is run over the two miles at Flemington Racecourse.

Drawn well in barrier three with Chris Symons to ride Shoreham will carry the hefty 60kg top weight, two kilos more than they had thanks to an apprentice claim last start when second to Ancient King in a 2800m handicap here on May 10.

Before that the up-and-comer ran third on a Heavy (10) track in the Listed Warnambool Cup (2350m) behind Akzar, how they handle the step up in distance key to their chances.

A bred stayer, Shoreham has been ultra-consistent throughout their career and hit headlines this time last year when third to Escado in the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m).

They were also runner-up to Precedence in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup (2500m) when blocked for a run last October, top Group form they’re out to return to this year.

The horse that beat Shoreham home last time out in the Momentum Energy Smilepower Trophy, the Peter Moody-trained Ancient King has also been accepted for Saturday’s rematch.

A fellow four-year-old, Ramonti gelding Ancient King carried 56.5kg to win with Daniel Stackhouse in the saddle but also go up two kilos (58.5kg) this weekend with Stackhouse staying on.

There are then four other last start winners in the mix, the most notable being the Darren Weir-trained hurdler Gotta Take Care out in barrier 11 with the second biggest weight (59kg).

A rising 10-year-old, Rubiton gelding Gotta Take Care is a definite veteran but they’re racing as well as ever having won their past two on the trot.

The first was here over 2600m on Anzac Day in a race Ancient King ran third in, and then they went to Warnambool on April 30 over the 3200m to post a smart three and a quarter length win in jumps race with 69kg on their back.

They get the distance again on Saturday, drop 10 kilos and are back on the flats.

Also coming off back-to-back wins is Nigel Blackiston’s Oasis Dream five-year-old Ominous.

The local gelding has raced in Adelaide for their past two starts, successful firstly over 2000m and then up over 2500m in the Listed Port Adelaide Cup three weeks ago for a big three length victory.

Other notable hopes then include the David Hayes-trained Unchain My Heart coming off a fourth to Ancient King, winner of the Bagot Handicap here on New Year’s Day McNulty for Michael Kent, and Moody’s other hopeful Vatuvei drawn in gate two and coming off a Warnambool Cup fifth form May 1.
