Queensland Day 2014 Field & Barriers

The opening Black Type race on the Doomben 10,000 Day program in Brisbane on Saturday is the 2014 Queensland Day Plate where a big field of sprinting three-year-olds will face off.

Running as Doomben Race 2 at 12:10pm (AEST) this year’s $100,000 Listed Nuturf Queensland Day (1200m) has drawn 15 final acceptors led by the Kelly Schweida-trained local Agitate.

Drawn in gate eight with Brisbane’s top jockey Damian Browne continuing his association, the Sequalo colt has run top two in their past four starts.

Last time out they stepped up to stakes class here at Doomben on May 10 and enjoyed a good one and a quarter length victory in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1100m).

They go up to 1200m then for Saturday’s Queensland Day showdown against a similar field they’re likely to start the favourite against to beat.

Also coming via a nice run in the Mick Dittman from earlier in the month is the David Lawlor-trained third placed Architect.

On Saturday the Bel Esprit gelding should get a gun run from barrier three similar to that they enjoyed from the inside alley in the Mick Dittman when beaten under one and a half lengths by the winner.

Before that they failed in Group 3 company when beating home just one other runner to finish 13th to Hopfgarten in the Gunsynd Classic over the mile, the step back in distance key to their form reversal.

Along with Agitate there are five other last start winners in this year’s Queensland Day field including Nash Rawiller’s mount Eastern Prince coming off a Toowoomba win for their Gold Coast trainer Gillian Heinrich.

Heinrich has also accepted for the lightly-raced Casino Express who will have just their third career start here.

The promising Casino Prince filly though will have her work cut out for her after drawing wide with barrier 12 following her winning effort at the Sunshine Coast to break her maiden status back on May 4.

Other notable hopes then include the Matthew Dunn-trained Fifth Chance in the ‘visitor’s draw’ and the Rob Heathcote-trained local Schillacking in gate four with Ryan Wiggins in the saddle.

Dehere gelding Fifth Chance, from Murwillumbah, won three straight earlier in the year before their fourth at Canterbury over 1250m last start.

Schillacking also comes off a fourth place finish, the promising Artie Schiller gelding having been beaten just one and a half lengths by Agitate in the Mick Dittman which looks the form line to follow for this race.
