Pure Purrfection Leads Chief De Beers Handicap 2014 Field

Running as Doomben Race 3 at 12:45pm (AEST) this year’s $80,000 Listed Sita Australia Chief De Beers Handicap (1100m) features a field of 13 hopefuls including Pure Purrfection.

The in-form daughter of General Nediym has a wide barrier 12 draw to overcome however if she is to go back-to-back at the track following her narrow victory in the Listed Bribie Handicap (1100m) here on May 10.

For the Bribie Handicap the five-year-old winner carried the 54kg minimum with Jim Byrne in the saddle, Byrne staying on for Saturday where Pure Purrfection goes up a kilo.

Bribie Handicap runner-up Metallurgical meanwhile carries 54kg again for Saturday’s rematch where the John Thompson-trained Redoute’s Choice seven-year-old races second-up for the season.

Along with Pure Purrfection the other last start winner in the field is then the Donald Baker-trained Mr Favulous to be ridden by in-form apprentice Tegan Harrison from a gun barrier two draw.

The Toowoomba-based Falvelon five-year-old has won two of their past three starts, most recently a Benchmark 85 at home over 1200m with 56.5kg on their back, the galloper going down to 54kg for their big city assignment.

The Chief De Beers rails draw this year meanwhile belongs to the Don Robb-trained Big Bonanza who carries 56.5kg in their first run since finishing a brave second to Youthful Jack in the Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) at Grafton last July.

Heading the Chief De Beers weights with 59kg are then the Desleigh Forster-trained Adebisi and Rob Heathcote’s Excellantes.

Shovhog six-year-old Adebisi resumes here having last been seen running second to smart sprinter Tiger Tees in the Listed Falvelon Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm in February when carrying 57.5kg from a wide barrier 12 draw.

They do have more weight on Saturday and another wide barrier (11) to overcome but their first-up record is very good (9-4-1-0).

Heathcote’s local six-year-old Excellantes meanwhile is out to improve on their 11th in the Bribie Handicap where they were caught wide throughout.

They jump from barrier nine on Saturday and will be looking to atone for that horror lead-up and return to the winning form that saw them take out the Listed Hinkler Handicap (1200m) two back at Eagle Farm by one and a half lengths over Benny’s Buttons.

Other notable hopes for Saturday then include the Kelly Schweida-trained Commands gelding Cape Kidnappers out to improve on their seventh when resuming in the Bribie Handicap and She Can Skate.
