Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
One of a number of Adelaide raiders nominated for the sprint feature at Flemington on Saturday, the Richard Jolly-trained Karacatis will race in Melbourne this weekend to see out their season in the $120,000 Listed The Straight Six (1200m).
2014 The Straight Six nominations and weights are led by fellow South Australian visitor Riziz (60kg) for Ken Sweeney who comes off a nice third behind 40-1 roughie Smokin’ Joey in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) from May 10.
Hussonet five-year-old Karacatis also ran in The Goodwood, the always honest gelding running three and a half lengths off the upset winner in sixth after making up plenty of ground late after barrier 17 (of 19) ruled them out early.
Winner of the Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield back on Boxing Day, Karacatis’s other recent Group 1 start produced an eighth behind Horse of the Year contender Lankan Rupee in the Oakleigh Plate in February.
From there they ran fifth to subsequent Robert Sangster Stakes winning mare Driefontein in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) back home and then second to fellow Straight Six nominee Essay Raider in the Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) before their luckless Goodwood run.
Options post-Goodwood for Karacatis were to be sent to the paddock for a spell ahead of a spring return or have one more run.
After they pulled through the Group 1 in good order Jolly made the decision to head to Melbourne for a final season start in The Straight Six.
“It was either go to the paddock or have one more run with him,” Jolly told The Advertiser.
“He come through the Goodwood well so it’s a good option for him.”
In The Goodwood they carried 55.5kg but must rise to 57kg for Saturday’s showdown.
Goodwood third placegetter Riziz also goes up in the weights from 55.5kg to 60kg, something that could rule them out of the race.
They’ve also been nominated for the $50,000 McMahon Services Handicap (1000m) at Morphettville Parks, what they’re allocated there as the 105 top rated entry to determine where they race on Saturday.
“We’ll probably make a decision in the morning but we’ll just wait and see what weight he gets,’’ Sweeney said yesterday.
Flemington though is the preferred option for the extra prize money and their top record at the track, Riziz having won the Listed All Victorian Sprint Series Final (1200m) there last July.
They also won the Listed Creswick Stakes (1200m) at the track two years ago, and most recently finished a credible fifth behind Broken in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on the back of the Sprint Series success.
A hoof issue saw them miss seven months of racing after the Aurie’s Star but Sweeney is confident they are back to their best and ready to continue their nice 2014 form that saw them win back-to-back Morphettville races before the Group 1 minor placing.
Karacatis meanwhile was last seen at Flemington in November last year, their best effort then being a fourth to Fontelina in the Group 2 Yellowglen Stakes (1200m).
In The Goodwood they were ridden by Mark Zahra but on Saturday Jolly has engaged their services of Damien Lane who rode them in Melbourne earlier this season.
“Damien Lane has been booked, he rode him to win the Christmas Stakes at Caulfield so he knows the horse well,” Jolly said.
