Fresh off a Group 1 third at home in Adelaide, the Ken Sweeney-trained Riziz travels to Flemington this Saturday to tackle The Straight Six 2014.
A bumper 28 nominations were taken for this year’s $120,000 Listed The Straight Six (1200m) running as one of two Black-Types on the Flemington race card on the weekend.
Heading the weights with 60kg is Sweeney’s Zariz five-year-old Riziz.
The South Australian raider was last seen running a brave third behind upset winner Smokin’ Joey in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on May 10.
There they only carried 55.5kg so it is a notable rise in kilos for the gelding, but one they are expected to handle.
Leading into The Goodwood Riziz enjoyed back-to-back Adelaide wins carrying 59.5kg both times including in the Listed Matrice Stakes (1200m) to kick off their 2014 season.
Prior to that their latest run was in August last year in Melbourne.
There they backed up from a Listed All Victorian Sprint (1200m) win at Flemington to run fifth behind Broken at the same track and distance in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m).
Following Riziz in The Straight Six weights this year are then the Peter Moody-trained Ready To Rip (59.5kg) coming via a fifth in The Goodwood, the David Hayes-trained Goodwood failure (14th) Pago Rock (59kg) and Darren Weir’s Wangoom-based galloper Blackie (59kg).
Black Minnalouse six-year-old Blackie resumed off a six month spell on April 30 to run second to Kneeling in their home town Cup over 1200m in the wet, racing for the first time since here.
Despite the high number of nominees just two come off a last start win with the Mick Burles-trained Tassie galloper The Cleaner and General Peekay for Mick Price.
The Cleaner won the Listed George Adams over the Launceston mile back home on February 26 on the back of a Hobart Cup fifth behind Epingle.
General Peekay meanwhile made an impact in Adelaide during the autumn last year before spending nearly a year on the sidelines with injury.
They returned on April 26 to run fourth in the Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville before returning to Flemington on May 10 for a nice victory over the same distance.
Price has also nominated for Le Bonsir to be ridden by Dwayne Dunn as they come off a third to their stablemate earlier in the month and Exceed And Excel four-year-old Eximius (Dean Yendall) with Craig Newitt to ride General Peekay.
Other notable hopes then include another Adelaide visitor in DC McKay winner Essay Raider for Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas, the Richard Jolly-trained DC runner-up Karacatis coming off a Goodwood sixth and Octavia for Michael Moroney.
The full The Straight Six 2014 nominations and weights are listed below, cut to the final field tomorrow morning.
