Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Trainer Gary Kennewell is hopeful well-trialled journeyman Conservatorium will be allocated a favourable inside barrier on Wednesday for this weekend’s featured Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) in Brisbane.
Finishing a competitive eighth amongst classy competition in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at South Australia’s Morphettville Racecourse last time out, Kennewell said the prospect of drawing well could mean the difference in a successful appearance for the seven-year-old this weekend.
“I just want to draw an inside gate with him” Kennewell told TVN.
“He can’t keep drawing wide and working hard in these races.
“The only time he’s ever drawn a good gate in a hot race was last year’s Stradbroke and he’s still looking for a run.”
Completing a successful piece of work on the Doomben course proper alongside talented stable mate Starkiato on Tuesday morning, Kennewell is confident Conservatorium will be in prime condition come the Doomben 10,000.
“We floated the horses up here last week; they got here last Wednesday so they have had plenty of time to settle in” Kennewell added.
“We took both horses over to Doomben this morning for a gallop and Starkiato worked really well for him, and Conservatorium worked OK.”
Claiming an impressive total of nine wins and six places from 34 competitive race starts to date, Conservatorium is a proven performer in major winter races, having finished second in both the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) and Listed Mercedes Benz Mile (1600m) and won the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) in 2013.
While unable to claim a race win in three starts this time in, the Royal Academy gelding has steadily built to the task and is more than a chance of success if in ideal position rounding onto the final straight in the 2014 Doomben 10,000.
Offered little chance of success in betting markets for success in this weekend’s feature race, Conservatorium is currently featured at particularly generous odds of $26 for victory.
A noted performer in 2014 and Group 1 champion in the spring of 2013, Rebel Dane is currently sole occupant of the top line of betting to claim the 2014 Doomben 10,000 crown at a quote of $3.80, ahead of local hero Buffering ($4), Spirit Of Boom ($5) and Knoydart ($9).
