Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday at Doomben Racecourse one of the Black Type races on the program will be the Queensland Day Plate 2014 where last start winner at the track Agitate heads the nominations.
Kelly Schweida’s locally-trained Sequalo colt stole the show at Doomben on May 10 with their smart one and a quarter length victory in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1110m).
They are now set to back up on Doomben 10,000 Day in the $100,000 Listed Queensland Day Plate (1200m) against another field of fellow three-year-olds.
The Mick Dittman was Agitate’s maiden stakes assignment and if accepted on Saturday they will be shooting for back-to-back Listed victories.
Also coming off a run in the Mick Dittman trifecta is the third placed Architect for David Lawlor.
The Bel Esprit gelding had been outclassed the start before when 13th of 14 runners in the Group 3 Gunsynd Handicap (1600m), won by the Rob Heathcote-trained Hopfgarten, on April 26.
They enjoyed the step back in both distance and class then for the Mick Dittman where they were able to come within one and a half lengths of the winner who they’ll be out to turn the tables on this weekend.
Heathcote meanwhile has nominated for the consistent Schillacking coming via a Mick Dittman fourth.
The Artie Schiller gelding has run top three in all of their previous four starts and will be looking to return to that form at a higher level in the Queensland Day Plate.
Also coming via the Mick Dittman are fifth placed Le Val for Noel Doyle and sixth placed Northern Meteor filly Diamond Angel who won her previous start at the Sunshine Coast.
Other last start winners aside from Agitate in the mix on Saturday include Helen Page’s Ipswich winner in the mud on May 3 Hydrazine, Stuart Kendrick’s in-form son of Oratorio Passatorio who has won their past two on the trot at the Sunshine Coast, and the Gillian Heinrich-trained duo of Casino Express and Eastern Prince.
The Gold Coast-based Heinrich has nominated for a total of four hopes with her other entries being Choisir gelding Eliminator who was fourth in the Phelan Ready Stakes during December and Walkin’ Tall.
Two gallopers also come via an unplaced run in the Group 3 Gold Cost Guineas (1200m) from the start of the month and will be looking to improve on firmer ground with Whiskey Allround (9th) and the Stuart Kendrick-trained Snitzel’s Jewel (11th).
See below for the full Queensland Day Plate 2014 nominations, set to be cut to the capacity 16 starter final field with acceptances on Wednesday.
