Goodbye Kevin Leads 2014 Dalrello Stakes Field & Odds

Anthony Honess’ Coffs Harbour visitor Goodbye Kevin has opened top of the odds for tomorrow’s Dalrello Stakes 2014 on Doomben Cup Day in Brisbane.

The Immovable Option gelding is one of 14 two-year-olds set to face off in the day’s opening Black Type race, the $100,000 Listed Channel Seven Dalrello Stakes (1200m) due to jump as Doomben Race 2 at 12:45pm (AEST).

Of those it is Goodbye Kevin, drawn ideally in barrier two with ace hoop Blake Shinn booked for the ride, who is heading the latest Dalrello Stakes odds at a firming price of $3.60.

The up-and-comer is after their first win since a successful debut at Tamworth back in October last year, Goodbye Kevin having failed to win in their subsequent three runs.

They’ve been far from disgraced however including their last start third when just a quarter length off Aimee in the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast a fortnight ago.

That was their debut stakes assignment and they handled it, the step up to 1200m and the Heavy (8) track very well with improvement expected.

In a relatively open market there are then four other single figure chances in Dalrello Stakes betting with:

  • #3 Vienna Royale ($5.50) – Tony Gollan-trained local Falvelon gelding having their fifth start here, haven’t won since a Doomben sprint back in early October and have been hit and miss since but tipped to improve as they drop back in class having last been seen running sixth to the now retired Unencumbered in the $2 million Magic Millions Guineas over 1200m on the Gold Coast in January, go well fresh and have seen the distance now
  • #7 Veloz ($7.50) – Toowoomba-trained Sequalo colt won their debut at home on May 3 and so are in prime form to bring that to the big city a fortnight later and retain their undefeated status going up in class and distance here
  • #13 Runkle ($7.50) – Wide barrier 11 draw for Gary Portelli’s Sydey raider to overcome but big race specialist Chris Munce has the experience to guide the Real Saga colt who is looking to break their maiden status after two decent runs, most recently in the Claret Stakes (1300m) at Hawkesbury when fourth, drop back in distance to suit
  • #1 Bassillique ($9) – Toby Edmonds-trained Gold Coast galloper, this son of I Am Invincible is after their second win at start number three, won the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes on debut here in December before their Group 3 BJ McLachlan flop when dead last behind Unencumbered walking home in the end, they’ve had three trials since and so are back to atone in the winter

Also in the mix at longer odds and capable of an upset are the likes of Rob Heathcote’s Magic Millions failure Pinch River ($10) out in the ‘visitor’s draw’ and Sunshine Coast galloper Thief Of Hearts ($10) drawn at the opposite end of the field with the rails run to give them an advantage on debut.
