After a failure in Adelaide, Gai Waterhouse’s Group 1 winning mare Driefontein is set to have her autumn – winter campaign extended to include a shot at the Doomben 10,000 2014 in Brisbane Saturday week.
The four-year-old Fastnet Rock mare took her earnings to over $2.1 million two back when she scored her maiden Group 1 win in the Robert Sangster Classic at Morphettville Racecourse.
A former star juvenile that first made headlines with her $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic win in 2012, Driefontein was sent out as the short priced favourite to go back-to-back in South Australia last Saturday.
She was out to score the Robert Sangster – The Goodwood double achieved by Platelet the year before, but failed on the rain affected track.
After missing the kick she was behind from the get go and under pressure a long way out on the Slow (7) track.
Then over the final stages the favourite was nowhere to be seen struggling to finish off and eventually crossing eight lengths away 15th behind upset winner, 40-1 shot Smokin’ Joey who is now in line for a start in the $1.36 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm next month.
Waterhouse was obviously disappointed by the big loss but was eager to give the mare a chance to atone by taking her to Queensland for a Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
She’ll race next weekend at Doomben Racecourse in the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) where her competition will include Sydney raider Rebel Dane and the BTC Cup trifecta of Famous Seamus (1st), Spirit Of Boom (2nd) and beaten favourite Buffering (3rd) looking to win back the love of the punters.
These four dominate the pre-field Doomben 10,000 odds while Driefontein can be found much further down the markets as a $21 outsider after her Goodwood flop.
Her trainer though rates her a far better chance than that if they get a dry Doomben track.
“Hopefully we will get a dry track for the Doomben 10,000,” Waterhouse told The Daily Telegraph.
“She has pulled up really well after the Adelaide race and she will go to Brisbane in career best form.”
