Dothraki Leads Fred Best Classic 2014 Field

Last start Gold Coast Guineas winner Dothraki is after another Group 3 win in Queensland this weekend, the Gerald Ryan-trained Sydney raider heading the 2014 Fred Best Classic field at Doomben Racecourse.

The Mossman colt views for their fourth win at career start number 13 on Saturday as they take on a capacity line-up in this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Ascend Sales Trophies Fred Best Classic (1350m).

Running as Doomben Cup Day Race 5, the Fred Best Classic drew 19 final acceptors, 16 of which are assured of a start.

Dothraki is one of five last start winners in that 16, but has drawn wide in barrier 12 with Nash Rawiller to ride.

Rawiller stays having ridden the up-and-comer for their past four starts for two wins, including the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) in the wet on May 3.

All going well Dothraki, like many in the Fred Best field, has plans to continue on to the $300,000 Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day, June 7.

Also coming via nice runs in the Gold Coast Guineas this year are runner-up Safeguard and third placed Palmera Lad both also drawn wide for Saturday’s rematch with barrier 11 and 14 respectively.

The John O’Shea-trained Exceed And Excel colt Safeguard improved on a dead last in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes to finish just a long neck away in the Guineas while Roslyn Pratt’s Brisbane-trained gelding Palmera Lad enjoyed an Eagle Farm win over the mile in February before resuming on the Gold Coast.

The other big name Fred Best Classic acceptor is then Rob Heathcote’s Mossman gelding Hopfgarten who shoots for their fifth straight win here.

The local champ hasn’t been beaten since the start of March when they won over the track and distance enjoying three subsequent wins including the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) last time out on April 26.

Also coming off wins are the likes of Friendly Dragon, Lizards Lover and the Steven O’Dea-trained Sir Moments who won a support race on Hollindale Stakes Day at the Gold Coast a fortnight back.

Travelling over from Adelaide for a shot at the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival riches starting with the Fred Best meanwhile is the Phillip Stokes-trained Hucklebuck.

Stokes has high ambitions for the Elvstroem gelding who is nominated for the $1.36 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1200m) next month.

They’ve plenty of interstate race experience including their Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) win at Flemington back in February, and were last seen running eighth to Shamus Award in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) there on March 1.

Other notable Fred Best Classic hopes on the weekend then include the Kelso Wood-trained Gold Coast Guineas fifth placed colt Into The Red, one of two for Brisbane trainer Les Ross Voodoo Blue Magic, Paul Messara’s Scone visitor Havana coming off a second in the Mick Dittman here from last Saturday and Heathcote’s other runner Olympic Anthem out in barrier 17 (into 15) as they look to improve on their Gunsynd fourth behind their stable mate.
