Continuing the action of the two-day Scone Cup Carnival, the $200,000 Group 3 Coolmore Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) heads the line-up on Saturday.

The fillies and mares feature has drawn a field of 12 hopefuls this year including Blevic five-year-old Avoid Lightning allocated 57.5kg with barrier 11.

She won at Rosehill in the wet two back relishing a Heavy track to take out the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) before her second to Cosmic Endeavour last time out in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 19.

Avoid Lightning enjoyed a trial win last Friday on another rain-affected track and so if the weather turns and the Scone meeting is run in the wet she becomes a top chance.

Her main danger meanwhile is drawn in the extreme outside barrier (12) and carries the 58kg top weight with the John O’Shea-trained Aerobatics after two on the trot.

The Exceed And Excel mare ran third to Avoid Lighting in the Birthday Card Stakes before her fifth, also finishing behind her Saturday rival, in the Sapphire.

Last start however Aerobatics improved on that form at Hawkesbury to beat home previous Birthday Card Stakes runner-up Plucky Belle by a length in the Group 3 Darley Crown (1300m) on May 3.

The only other last start winner lining up in the Dark Jewel this year is then the Kristen Buchanan-trained Two Blue.

Glyn Schofield’s mount (barrier six) returned on April 26 at Randwick for a first-up win in a Benchmark 85 handicap, her first run since finishing a credible fourth in the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes over the Gosford mile in January.

Belle Of The Turf Stakes winner Myamira also runs in this year’s Dark Jewel, the local Scone-trained galloper last seen running fifth behind Monton in the January Handicap over the 1600m at Randwick on January 25.

Another big name acceptor is then the Gai Waterhouse-trained Dehere five-year-old Miss Stellabelle who ran fourth in the Darley Crown last start.

She was a close third behind Arctic Flight in the Dark Jewel last year that she’ll be looking to atone for this year from barrier three with Brenton Avdulla aboard.
