Chautauqua Tops 2014 Inglis 3YO Scone Guineas Field

The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Chautauqua vies for a Guineas double this weekend backing up from a win at Hawkesbury in the Inglis 3YO Scone Guineas 2014.

The Encosta De Lago gelding is one of a full 16 starters plus two emergencies engaged to face off in this year’s $400,000 Inglis 3YO Guineas (1400m), set to run as Scone Race 7 at 3:50pm on Saturday.

Drawn in gate 10 with Dwayne Dunn to ride Chautauqua was runner-up to In Cahoots in the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) three back before going up in class for a shot at the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 19.

There they could only manage to run seventh to Sidestep, an effort they improved on last start when stepped up to 1400m to win the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas.

This weekend they face another decent field that features four other last start winners confirmed of a start including the Robert Smerdon-trained Under The Louvre.

The Excellent Art colt has come up trumps with barrier four and comes into the race off some nice Melbourne form having won over 1200m at Moonee Valley and then Caulfield.

Just A Blur also vies for their third on the trot while the two others coming off a win are Stephen Farley’s Choice Larga who won over 1300m at Newcastle on May 6 and the Anthony Cummings-trained Magnus gelding Alpha Beat.

Like Chautauqua, Alpha Beat is shooting for back-to-back Guineas wins following their nice effort at Morphettville to defeat Lady Lakshmi in the Listed Adelaide Guineas (1600m) a fortnight ago.

Sydney’s top female trainer Gai Waterhouse also plays a strong hand in this year’s Scone Guineas field accepting for a quartet of three-year-olds.

Waterhouse is represented by Woodbine coming via a Group 1 All Aged Stakes seventh, Liberty’s Choice, Ryker and Cosmic Endeavour.

Drawn wide in barrier 15 giving jockey Kerrin McEvoy some work to do, Northern Meteor filly Cosmic Endeavour is in top form leading up to the Scone Guineas.

They’ve run top three in their past three races all in Group company.

Their second to Politeness in the Group 3 PJ Belle Stakes (1200m) in the mud three back was followed by a Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) victory at Randwick on April 19.

Then last time out Cosmic Endeavour was seen running third in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Darley Crown (1300m).

The other runner coming off some imposing form likely to feature in the top half of Scone Guineas betting is then the Luke Oliver-trained Jessy Belle.

Set to start from barrier nine with Glyn Schofield in the saddle, Rock Of Gibraltar filly Jessy Belle is up in class here racing in stakes company for the first time.

She’s earned the shot at Black Type success however having run top three in seven of her eight starts.

Back-to-back Moonee Valley wins over 1500m and then 1600m in December rounded out her summer prep before Oliver bought the Victorian filly back at Caulfield on April 19 where she ran second to The Quarterback.

Her last start was also at Caulfield and produced a second place finish when defeated three quarters of a length by Griante over 1440m, something Oliver hopes she can improve on with the addition of winkers to her gear on Saturday.

“This race has been our goal all preparation and we’ll only hit it third up and we’ve put the winkers on just to make her a little bit sharper,” he told AAP.

“The last three or four weeks she has been galloping the reverse way at Caulfield. It feels like she’s a pretty adaptable horse so she’s ready to go up there and run well.”

Of course adding even more interest to this year’s Scone Guineas is the inclusion of the Murray Baker-trained Twilight Royale.

The Testa Rossa filly, winner of the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington back in March, has a wide barrier 16 draw and poor recent form to overcome but 2.4 million reasons to do so.

She has finished well back in her two runs this time in including her last start 13th to Chautauqua in the Hawkesbury Guineas but is in line for a $2.4 million Inglis bonus if successful on Saturday.
