Mr O’Ceirin Set to Step-Up in 2014 Doomben Cup

Following a nice second to one of the equal favourites for this weekend last time out, Mr O’Ceirin is looking a genuine chance when they step up in class and distance for the Doomben Cup 2014 this weekend.

Ciaron Maher’s Melbourne raider runs in Brisbane on Saturday in the $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2020m) where they’ll be out to turn the tables on their last start conqueror Streama.

“That was what we planned with him, to go into these races and really target them,” Maher told AAP.

Guy Walter’s talented mare beat Mr O’Ceirin home on May 3 at the Gold Coast in the traditional Doomben Cup lead-up when winning the Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) in the mud by a half length.

She’s now heading the pre-field Doomben Cup odds at at an equal $3.80 with the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Hawkesbury Cup winner Leebaz.

Postponed six-year-old Mr O’Ceirin meanwhile is also at single figures for an upset Doomben Cup result paying $7 in the latest markets.

Winner of the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at home at Caulfield last spring, Mr O’Ceirin failed in their subsequent two elite level assignments when 10th and 11th respectively in the Turnbull Stakes and Caulfield Cup.

On paper they were bad runs but both times Mr O’Ceirin was beaten only four lengths.

After a six month break they returned on April 19 in Melbourne’s Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) but were blocked for a run and found the distance too short when 11th behind Sistine Demon.

Their Hollindale run then, where they also appreciated the rain-affected track, was much improved and hinted at perhaps more luck in their next Group 1 assignment.

“The horse has come up super. He has thrived up there [in Queensland],” Maher said.

“Glen Boss is going to ride him [in the Doomben Cup] and he knows him well.

“He’s got a lot of favours.

“He should hopefully peak for this.

“I think he’ll take good improvement out of his last run.”
