2014 Inglis 3YO Guineas Nominations – Twilight Royale Chases $2.4 million Bonus

Bjorn Baker’s smart filly Twilight Royale may have been well beaten in both her runs this time in but she could be in line for a massive $2.4 million bonus if she can win Saturday’s Inglis 3YO Guineas 2014 at Scone Racecourse.

There were 24 nominations taken for this year’s $400,000 Inglis 3YO Guineas (1400m), and while Twilight Royale isn’t likely to start one of the favourites there will still be plenty of attention on the daughter of Testa Rossa.

Along with the juicy $240,950 first prize on offer for Saturday’s three-year-olds’ showdown, Twilight Royale is in line for New South Wales’ biggest prize in history for connections for her wins as a juvenile in the Inglis Nursery Stakes, Inglis Premier and the Group 2 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in March last year.

The Sires’ was her last victory however with Twilight Royale well out of form having run 13th in her two runs this year, most recently beaten 11th Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) on May 3 with Baker describing her form as “average.”

“She’s going to have to improve a lot,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“Whatever happens, she’s done a good job.

“She’s won two Inglis races already – one was the Inglis Nursery race at Warwick Farm, worth quarter of a million, and the VRC Sires’ Produce, a Group 2 race in its own right, which has some prestige.

“She also won the Melbourne Inglis race at Mornington. So she’s won two Inglis races already, which has helped a lot.”

Good job indeed, Twilight Royale having bagged just under $500,000 in prize money to date after Baker found it hard to get owners involved in the $45,000 yearling buy.

“She cost $45,000 and when I bought her I didn’t have any buyers for her,” the Kiwi expat said.

“I thought I was a chance to syndicate at that amount. I couldn’t really afford to pay for her. I was lucky enough that some clients came in and they’ve proved very loyal clients.

“If she wins, it will be huge. It’s the biggest horse race pay day in NSW racing history and second only to the Melbourne Cup.”

Hawkesbury Guineas winner Chautauqua meanwhile is one of the likely top fancies in the Inglis 3YO Guineas this year, the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Encosta De Lago gelding seeking back-to-back wins over the 1400m.

There are five other last start winners nominated for the Inglis 3YO Guineas including the Anthony Cummings-trained Alpha Beat who took out the Listed Adelaide Guineas (1600m) at Morphettville at the start of the month.

Cummings could also be represented in the field by Flying Spur filly Federica nominated to go up to Group company for the first time since her fifth to Gypsy Diamond in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m) from the spring.

Coming off two on the trot meanwhile are Just A Blur and Under The Lourve.

One of the other headliner nominees then comes from the stables of Gai Waterhouse with Northern Meteor filly Cosmic Endeavour a top chance as she’s tested over more distance.

She won the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 19 before backing up in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Crown (1300m) on May 3 when third behind Aerobatics.

Waterhouse has also nominated for Liberty’s Choice, Ryker and Woodbine who comes off a seventh to Hana’s Goal in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick from last month.

See below for the full Inglis 3YO Guineas 2014 nominations to be cut to the capacity 16 starter final field on Wednesday.
