Rezoned Wins SA Fillies Classic 2014 for Punters

The second race at Morphettville Racecourse this afternoon has been won by the favourite Rezoned who took out the 2014 SA Fillies Classic atoning for her disappointing Group 1 run in at the track last start.

There was a bumper 16 starter field for this year’s $115,000 Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m) with a number of livewire chances in the markets.

It was the shortie at $4 that the punters backed, and were rewarded for, however with Robert Smerdon’s Zabeel filly Rezoned saluting in her third career win at start number 11.

After looking in trouble coming around the straight jockey Mark Zahra didn’t panic waiting for a gap to open up, as it often does on the inside at Morphettville, which his filly shot through to win running away.

While there was over a length and a half between first and the minor placings, it was a photo for second and third.

It looked briefly like a Smerdon-trained SA Fillies Classic quinella with stable mate to the winner, Not A Single Doubt filly Every Faith ($6), battling for the title of runner-up.

Greg Eurell’s High Chaparral filly Navajo Run ($9) though held her measure and snared second after a brave sixth to May’s Dream in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) here last start.

It was the Schweppes Oaks a fortnight ago that also produced today’s SA Fillies Classic winner, Rezoned having been blocked for a run to finish four and a half lengths away 11th.

Having had zero luck in the Oaks, things looked like they also weren’t going to go Rezoned’s way in the Group 3.

A good ride from Zahra, the step up in distance and a wet track though all pushed her over the line as she ran out the 2500m without a hitch.

“It was great to have a Zabeel filly win a race here,” Smerdon’s stable rep Stuart Webb told reporters post-win.

“A really great effort after having no luck two weeks ago [in the Oaks].

“Mark gave her a great ride, peeled her off the fence late and she was never going to get beaten.”

It was also a good effort today from the lightly-raced fourth placed Falamonte, Robbie Laing’s Falkirk filly having just her fourth start.

She came off a seventh at Caulfield from April 12 behind Bring Something in the Listed Galilee Series Final (2400m) and relished a little more distance here.

The field was led early by Too Cool To Fool with Rezoned settling well early in about sixth with Zahra ready to strike.

At the 1200m though there was a new leader, Artistic Lass caught wide and forced to go up early to lead them into the straight.

Going around the bed the favourite was still worse than midfield on the inside with Zahra looking where to go.

He found the space though and Rezoned burst through to take up front running inside the 200m, running down her stable mate and overcoming her awkward position to win her last race before a spring return.
