12/10 Ride Produces Pretty Pins’ 2014 Chairman’s Handicap Win

Underrated hoop Ryan Wiggins has produced what trainer John Thompson called a “12 out of 10” ride to guide back-in-form mare Pretty Pins to victory at home in today’s BRC Chairman’s Handicap 2014.

In a gun ride for Wiggins he got the Pins five-year-old from sixth to the fence from the ‘visitor’s gate’ 13 of 13 allowing her to run up the inside and take out today’s $125,000 Group 3 Landfill Logistics Chairman’s Handicap (2000m).

“I challenge everyone to go back and watch the replay of that ride,” Thompson told Sky Racing in his post-win interview.

“I reckon that was 10 out of 12…he [Wiggins] went round one horse from the outside barrier.

“Very good ride, I’m very happy with him.

“He’s an underrated rider. He’s a good young kid.”

The wide barrier and classy field of fellow staying types weren’t enough to stop what Thompson hopes is a form resurgence from his once very promising mare who hadn’t won a race since August last year at Randwick.

“She’s been out of form,” he admitted.

“She’s turned the corner a little bit in Queensland.

“The warmer weather…She’s from up here, coming home she’s happy again.”

She broke the drought well and truly in the Chairman’s though pushing forward to run down the red hot Chris Waller-trained favourite Danchai ($1.95) who held on for second two lengths back after finishing runner-up the start before in the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) in Sydney a fortnight ago.

Tony Gollan’s super consistent O’Reilly seven-year-old Brave Ali ($13) rounded out the trifecta in third for their first loss in four starts just a further half length away again.

Trained and stabled at Eagle Farm, Pretty Pins had been racing in Melbourne and then Sydney exclusively since her seventh in the 2012 Queensland Oaks as a three-year-old.

She was bought home last start when fifth to Angel Of Mercy in Eagle Farm’s Listed Members’ Stakes (1600m).

That was an effort she improved on today scoring an upset Chairman’s Handicap result as a $26 outsider.

“Luck went my way,” Wiggins said after the win.

“I had a bad gate…she was lucky enough to find the fence after a couple of hundred meters.”

Eventual third placed Brave Ali moved up to take the lead from early front runner Carmora at the 1600m mark today while the favourite Danchai, who got away well despite the horse beside them going up with the gates, settling one off the fence in fifth then sixth.

They had plenty of galloping room in that position but got a bit unbalanced heading into the straight where they tried to come down the outside and challenge Brave Ali who had been joined by Zennista.

But it was Wiggins and Pretty Pins up the inside who got the gun run over the closing stages to score an early Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival victory.

“Brave Ali took me into the race,” Wiggins said.

“She’s just won like the good horse she is and hopefully she’s back.

“She’s got good races in her [especially over a trip].

“She was running away from them on the line.

“She’s done well.”
