Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The first Group 1 of the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival is just over 24 hours away and there has been plenty of support for local trainers to get off to a flying start; with Buffering a clear favourite in 2014 BTC Cup betting markets.
Buffering is yet to record a win at the highest level of racing in his home state of Queensland, but is available at the short price of $2.20 to win the BTC Cup at Doomben tomorrow.
The Mossman gelding is yet to score a race win this preparation, finishing seventh in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Royal Randwick on March 15 and third in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) at the same venue on April 12, but will be very difficult to beat if he can recapture the form that he showed when he recorded three Group 1 wins during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival.
Another locally-trained sprinter is on the second line of 2014 BTC Cup betting markets; with Tony Gollan-trained Spirit Of Boom currently available at a quote of $5.50.
Spirit Of Boom has been a consistent performer for a number of years, but is clearly in the best form of his career after finishing second in both the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 22 and Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 8 before taking out the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 21 during the 2014 Melbourne Festival Of Racing.
The Sequalo entire was upset by half-brother Temple Of Boom in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on April 26, but this race should be run to suit with plenty of early speed expected.
Snitzerland has remained steady at BTC Cup odds of $8 throughout the week and is one sprinter that will be advantaged by the wet weather staying away from Brisbane this weekend.
The daughter of Snitzel started her autumn preparation with a win in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 15 and was an unlucky second in the Challenge Stakes, but failed to fire on a wet track in the T.J. Smith Stakes and was beaten as a short-priced favourite in the Victory Stakes.
Snitzerland is joined in the 2014 BTC Cup field by stablemate Hot Snitzel and the five-year-old is taking strong form into the Group 1 event this weekend.
Hot Snitzel returned to the races with a narrow second behind Flamberge in the Group 3 Sebring Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on April 5 before winning the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on April 26 and is available at odds of $9 to score his maiden Group 1 win tomorrow.
The only other runner in the 2014 BTC Cup field that is available at single figure odds is Temple Of Boom ($9.50), while Tiger Tees has drifted out to odds of $11 after being backed into $9 when rain was forecast in Brisbane yesterday.
