An exciting edition of The Goodwood is set to play out at Morphettville Racecourse on Saturday with a number of livewire prospects in the Adelaide Autumn Carnival classic, our tips for the feature detailed below.

A capacity 20 starters will face off in this year’s $500,000 Group 1 The Tapestry Wines Goodwood (1200m) including the first emergency Classy Jack getting in with the withdrawal of Éclair Big Bang.

Heading the current The Goodwood betting odds at $7 though is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Sydney mare Driefontein.

She’s looking to become the fifth female galloper in as many years to beat home the boys in The Goodwood, and join Platelet (2013) and Black Caviar (2012) as winners of the Robert Sangster Stakes – The Goodwood double.

The mare that did it last year, Darren Weir’s daughter of Strategic Platelet, is then back this season for another shot paying $7.50 to turn the tables on Driefontein after running second behind her in both the Robert Sangster and the RN Irwin Stakes before that.

Also paying $7.50 is local mare Miracles Of Life drawn in gate two for her swansong race with connections to sell the 2013 Blue Diamond Stakes winner at the end of the month.

Occupying the third line of The Goodwood betting at $8 is then Sistine Demon who boasts the highest Win Rate of the field, an impressive 50%.

Also at single figures is Sessions ($9) for Darley’s new private trainer John O’Shea looking to round out his first week in the position with an early Group 1 for the stable.

While all of these runners have genuine claims to win, history shows that four of the past 10 The Goodwood winners jumped at double figures meaning an upset could be on the cards.

Just some of the longer priced hopes that could be behind that upset this year then include Robert Sangster Stakes third placegetter Gregers ($10), last start DC McKay Stakes winner Essay Raider ($12) or even the local Ken Sweeney-trained Riziz coming off back-to-back wins at the track and distance.

#20 Gregers ($10)

She’s the market mover and we can see why the money is coming for David Hayes’ smart young Commands filly. The females have an awesome record in this race with four in as many years saluting, including one filly, so she’s the right type. She’s also got the impressive lead-up form to show she can handle this class having run fourth (beaten only half a length) in the William Reid Stakes at Flemington two back before her third in the Robert Sangster Stakes here last time out. She was defeated by fellow The Goodwood fancies Driefontein and Platelet that day, but with a run at the track now under her belt and a gun gate five draw think she could have what it takes to turn the tables, she’ll be tracking handy and ready to strike so they better be ready for her.

#6 Driefontein ($7)

She’s the deserving favourite and there are plenty of facts and stats to back up a win by Waterhouse’s Fastnet Rock mare who is out to do what Platelet and Black Caviar did before her in their respective years and win the Robert Sangster – Goodwood double. She had last year’s winner Platelet’s measure in both the RN Irwin and then again in the Robert Sangster and they say you shouldn’t bet against a mare while she’s in-form. Loves Adelaide obviously and has an inside draw, but in a big field barrier three might not be the perfect spot with no winner since 1983 jumping from the gate. She’ll be right up on the pace looking to lead and has shown she can hold them off, it’s going to be close.

#10 Riziz ($41)

Throwing a real roughie into the mix here are rate Riziz a decent chance to get up there in the minor placings and represent the double figure outsiders in the top three. Jumps from barrier four which looks ideal as they’ll follow Gregers up through the field if jockey Chris Symons does his job right. Locally trained and has that home track advantage, proven by their past two wins over the 1200m here this time in. Most recently the five-year-old held them off in the Matrice Stakes in March so they’re fresh for this, fitness is the concern but their first-up record (5-2-1-1) is good so represents excellent value.
