The Michael Kent-trained Miss Steele has opened favourite to win her Adelaide debut when taking on the locals in Saturday’s Proud Miss Stakes 2014.
The closing race at Morphettville for The Goodwood Day, this year’s $115,000 Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) has drawn a final field of 17 fillies and mares.
Leading the latest Proud Miss Stakes betting markets at a quote of $4.40 is the rails-drawn Miss Steele.
Set to get the run of the race from her inside barrier, the Statue Of Liberty filly races for just the ninth time on the weekend.
She’s already a three time winner, most recently taking out a Benchmark 78 over 1000m at Moonee Valley on March 29.
Before that she was competitive when fourth to Jazz Song in the Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes at the same track meaning she’s likely to handle the step back up to Group company here without a hitch.
Close second favourite in the Proud Miss Stakes odds at $4.80 is then Vibrant Rouge.
Prepared by Glenn Thorton in Geelong the five-year-old Written Tycoon mare is second up for the season and looking to improve on a seventh at Sandown from a fortnight ago.
There are then three other single figure fancies with Girl Guide ($6), I Love It ($6.50) and Kneeling ($7.50).
The lightly-raced David Hayes-trained four-year-old Girl Guide is in flying form coming into the race on the back of three straight wins that have taken her record to four wins from five starts.
She’s yet to race outside of Victoria or in stakes’ company but her consistency has proven her worthy of a shot at bigger things starting here.
I Love It is another visiting Victorian, the John Salanitri-trained Artic Schiller filly coming via an ANZAC Day fourth over the 1000m at Flemington.
She’s had the one Group 3 run before back in the spring when third in the Champagne Stakes to Thump so could surprise a few here being on the improve.
Kneeling meanwhile is far more experienced, the Peter Moody-trained daughter of Encosta De Lago a ‘veteran’ of 26 starts the last of which she won when beating home Blackie in the Wangoom Handicap at Warrnambool on April 30.
