Zennista Tops BRC Chairman’s Handicap 2014 Field

Kiwi raider Zennista is the top rated acceptor for the 2014 BRC Chairman’s Handicap at Doomben Racecourse this weekend, the Lisa Latta-trained mare back down under for the first time since last winter.

Twelve months ago the now six-year-old Zennor Rob Roy mare came via a distant seventh in the Listed Anzac Handicap (1600m) back home in New Zealand to raid the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

This year she ran fourth in the same lead-up race on April 25 and returns to Queensland in the $125,000 Group 3 Landfill Logistics Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) on Saturday.

Drawn on the rails with barrier one and Mark Du Plessis to ride, Zennista is after her first win since November last year and has the good form in Brisbane to suggest a nice run here.

Last winter her biggest achievements included a third in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) and a nice two and a half length win in the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m), both races she could progress onto again this season.

Zennista heads the Chairman’s Handicap weights on 59kg however and so gives plenty of weight away to some class rivals.

The second heaviest weighted runner is the Chris Waller-trained Danchai in barrier two with 56.5kg and Nash Rawiller to ride.

The grey Authorized five-year-old comes via a nice second to Spilway in the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) at Randwick on April 26 and so this distance looks ideal.

Tony Gollan’s flying Brave Ali then follows with 56kg, apprentice Tegan Harrison to ride them from barrier six.

The evergreen O’Reilly seven-year-old shoots for their fourth win on the trot here after some very nice form in Brisbane.

They went back-to-back over 2100m and 2030m respectively at Doomben earlier in the autumn and were last seen winning the Listed Tails Stakes (2128m) at Eagle Farm two weeks ago making them an obvious local danger.

Also coming off wins are then the John Morell-trained Lauren Tate (barrier eight) and the Desleigh Forster-trained Carmora (barrier four).

Pins mare Lauren Tate is another visiting New Zealander looking to plunder the winter riches in Brisbane, the four-year-old last seen winning the Group 2 Travis Stakes (2000m) back home on April 26.

Eagle Farm-based Stromberg Carlson gelding Carmora meanwhile won at home over the mile last time out and step up to the 2000m for the first time on Saturday for their seventh career start.

Forster has also accepted for her Postponed mare Poste Restante who has a wide barrier 12 draw to overcome as they look to improve on their two fourth place finishes behind Brave Ali in the lead-up including in the Tails Stakes.

Tails Stakes runner-up Heartfelt Quest also backs up in the Chairman’s Handicap this weekend.

Len Treloar’s Sunshine Coast-trained Show A Heart four-year-old was a half length off Brave Ali in that run and is a solid chance again on Saturday from a nice barrier three draw.
