Trainer Jason Coyle is confident of a successful 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival for talented gelding Scream Machine, which is likely to include tilts at both the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) and major Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).
Yet to contest a competitive event in 2014, Coyle told AAP he is hopeful both a fresh set of legs and positive results throughout the 2013 will count for a lot towards Scream Machine’s claims this winter.
“We thought we would change tack this time and miss the autumn to concentrate on the winter” Coyle said.
“He’s always been a really good fresh horse so I’m hoping to take advantage of that this time in.
“I think the form around a horse like Toydini is strong enough to warrant keeping him sharp for at least one of the Group 1 races up there.”
Confirmed to make a first-up appearance in this weekend’s Benchmark 95 Handicap (1350m) at Rosehill Gardens, Coyle confirmed he will let results confirm the path taken by Scream Machine this time in.
“But if he is ultra-impressive in what he does on Saturday, I’d look at the Doomben 10,000 first” Coyle added.
A noted performer over middle distance events, Coyle said Scream Machine’s recent work over two strong barrier trials will likely result in a continued step up is distance for the remainder of his racing career.
“When they run on in their races like he does it’s the obvious thing to do to keep stepping them up in distance” Coyle said.
“But he over-races when the speed drops and as he has got older it seems he might be going opposite to the way he has raced.”
Yet to appear on track this year, Scream Machine will likely be offered at generous odds for both the 2014 Doomben 10,000 and Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap following this weekend’s hit-out at Rosehill.
