Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Trainer Gerald Ryan is confident either of his star entrants Snitzerland and Hot Snitzel can overcome resounding pre-post favourite Buffering and win the major Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Brisbane’s Doomben Racecourse this weekend.
While unsure at to which horse is more likely to figure on account of varying surface quality, Ryan told the Gold Coast Bulletin Buffering is without doubt to the one beat in his home state this weekend.
“If Buffering wants to lead he can lead, and the only thing I wouldn’t like is to be taking Buffering on 400 metres from home because he will beat you in a dog fight” Ryan said.
“But I reckon he is a horse you have to sit right on his hammer and have one quick dash at.”
Breaking through for a maiden Group 1 victory in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) first-up this year, Ryan conceded Snitzerland appears to have experienced something of a lull in form over recent appearances, but is confident she is more than a chance in the BTC Cup.
“I reckon a lot of people underrated the form of those other horses leading into it” Ryan said.
“When you have them geared up to go like she did first-up in February, it’s hard to keep them at that level.
“Sure, she is probably a bit below that at the moment but not that far below what she will be disgraceful.”
Jogging home to win the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last time out, Hot Snitzel has gained a tag as a performer on damp tracks and is a leading chance if the inclement weather forecast for Brisbane later in the week comes to fruition, according to Ryan.
“Hot Snitzel is flying and he has been racing the best he has his whole career this preparation” Ryan said.
“But I think he can only win the BTC Cup is it’s damp, and if it’s dry we’ve got Snitzerland.”
Having each displayed key form over events in 2014, Snitzerland and Hot Snitzel are currently offered as sole occupants of the fourth and fifth lines of betting for success in this weekend’s BTC Cup, at odds of $8 and $9.50 respectively.
A three-time Group 1 winner over the 2013 spring, Buffering is currently clear favourite to claim the BTC Cup at short $2.20 odds, ahead of Spirit Of Boom ($5) and Temple Of Boom ($7.50).
