RA Lee Stakes 2014 Field Features Crucial

Anthony Freedman’s last start Caulfield winner Crucial is one of the in-form gallopers accepted to face off in Saturday’s $150,000 Group 3 Tapestry Shiraz RA Lee Stakes (1600m) in Adelaide.

The Goodwood Day feature runs as Morphettville Race 6, a total of 15 runners set to run in this year’s 2014 RA Lee Stakes field.

Freedman saddles up Crucial in barrier seven, Dean Yendall to ride the progressive Nadeem mare who shoots for her third win from four starts.

This is a notable class rise for the five-year-old who hasn’t raced in Group company since a close sixth in last year’s Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) here last Adelaide Racing Carnival.

She’s got the right lead-up form however having won at Moonee Valley (2040m) and Caulfield (1600m) recently and so over the mile here could be a danger.

Of course the headline RA Lee Stakes hopeful is the local Phillip Stokes-trained Maybe Discreet drawn one on Crucial’s inside with barrier six.

Dom Tourneur rides the Shamardal four-year-old who has won five of her 16 starts to date.

Maybe Discreet improved on a sixth behind Riziz two back in the Listed Matrice Stakes (1200m) here to win the Listed City Of Adelaide Handicap (1400m) by a length over Golden Penny on April 12.

She’s had a month between runs then and looks prime for the RA Lee Stakes.

The Richard Jolly-trained Golden Penny has also accepted for Saturday setting up a rematch with Maybe Discreet, but has a ninth to Tango’s Daughter in the Queen Of The South Stakes to improve on.

Along with Crucial and Maybe Discreet the other last start winner in the RA Lee this year is then the Michael Moroney-trained Rhythm To Spare with the outside barrier (15) to overcome.

The Pins gelding enjoyed a 1610m win at Flemington on Anzac Day and will enjoy going over the distance again here.

Also drawn wide one inside of Rhythm To Spare with barrier 14 is the David Jolly-trained Streetcar Valour who is looking to break a frustrating run of five straight second place finishes.

They are joined in Saturday’s field then by stable mate Danish Spy (barrier five) who won at the track and distance two back before their seventh in the Queen Of The South.

Other notable hopes then include the Peter Moody-trained stake performing Bel Esprit gelding Oregon Spirit and Saturday Affair drawn nicely in gate three with Jason Holder to ride.

Prepared locally by Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas, four-year-old Any Given Saturday mare Saturday Affair won at Oakbank two back before running a brave foruth in the Queen Of The South Stakes with under two lengths separating her and the winner that day.
