Leading trainer Gerald Ryan has confirmed a maiden appearance north of the border for talented two-year-old Time For War in this weekend’s Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Brisbane’s Doomben Racecourse, ahead of a major tilt at the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) on June 7th.
A standout performer over just three competitive appearances so far, Ryan told AAP Time For War has taken to work well since his most recent start for fourth in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 12th, and will use this weekend’s Champagne Classic and other lead-up events to decide whether or not a mile will suit the Snitzel colt.
“He has done very well since the Sires and will be the only two-year-old we are taking to Queensland” Ryan said.
“He is entered for the JJ Atkins next month but I’m not sure at this stage whether he is ready for 1600 metres yet.
“We will play it by ear.”
Comfortably claiming the CFMEU Mining & Energy Plate (1100m) ahead of classy competition in his racing debut on November 2nd, Time For War has returned to the track in great order this season; claiming the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) by nearly half a length prior to his most recent tilt at the Sires Produce Stakes.
Included in a less-than capacity list of 14 for this weekend’s two-year-old feature race, Time For War will have to find an extra gear if to overcome exciting filly Eloping, who has also been confirmed for her first start of the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
Securing four victories and one place from seven career starts to date, Eloping will line up as arguably the most experienced runner in the 2014 Champagne Classic field, and will be particularly difficult to beat if allocated a favourably gate at Wednesday’s barrier draw.
Unlucky to finish seventh when hampered for a run in the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 5th, the Choisir filly will carry winning form into the Group 2 Champagne Classic after comfortably claiming the Group 3 Royal Randwick Stakes (1200m) last time out on April 19th.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Champagne Classic is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
