Rob Heathcote’s smart local champion Buffering has opened early favourite in 2014 Doomben 10,000 betting, a position they get a chance to secure this weekend at the track.
On Saturday the Mossman six-year-old lines up in the $400,000 Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m), a race they finished fourth behind Your Song in last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
Now with a trio of Group 1 wins under their belt thanks to a tremendous spring season, Buffering is set to improve on that performance and strike at elite level at home in Queensland.
He also ran in last year’s $650,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) finishing third behind Epaulette, another top run they’ll be looking to do better than this season.
The Doomben 10,000 2014 runs at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday May 24 and it is Buffering topping the Ladbrokes.com.au futures markets at a quote of $4.20.
There are then three other single figure chances with:
- Rebel Dane ($5) – Gary Portelli-trained four-year-old ran second in the TJ Smith two back where Buffering finished third, and was last seen crossing fifth in the All Aged Stakes over 1400m at Randwick
- Sidestep ($6) – Darley-owned Exceed And Excel colt now prepared by their private trainer John O’Shea, in flying form with back-too-back autumn wins in Sydney most recently in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) on April 19, races in Saturday’s BTC Cup and is likely to jump favourite
- Spirit Of Boom ($6.50) – Another BTC Cup hope, Tony Gollan’s Queensland sprint star comes off a second to their half-brother and stable mate Temple Of Boom in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm in their first run since winning the Group 1 William Reid Stakes in Melbourne
It’s then a logjam of chances after the top four including two smart mares, Driefontein ($13) and Platelet ($14).
Gai Waterhouse’s Fastnet Rock four-year-old Driefontein has beaten home the Robert Smerdon-trained Platelet in their last two runs when finishing first and second respectively in both the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) and Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville.
They meet again in Adelaide this Saturday facing off in the $500,000 Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) where their Doomben 10,000 claims will be staked.
Also high up Doomben 10,000 betting is Buffering’s stable mate Solzhenitsyn ($15), the St. Petersburg seven-year-old looking to improve on a Victory Stakes sixth first-up this prep.
The other best fancied then include Gerald Ryan’s Hall Mark Stakes winner Hot Snitzel ($16), More Than Ready four-year-old Knoydart ($16) who ran second in that same race, Ryan’s Group 1 winning mare Snitzerland ($16) coming via a Victory Stakes third into the BTC Cup if the rain stays away and the Joe Pride-trained The Galaxy champ Tiger Tees ($18).
The next stage of Doomben 10,000 acceptances are taken on May 14 followed by the final field out on May 21 so stay tuned.
