Streama Tops 2014 Doomben Cup Odds

Following her gutsy win in the wet at the Gold Coast over the weekend, Guy Walter’s four time Group 1 winning mare Streama is now heading the Doomben Cup 2014 odds for what could be her swansong elite level run.

The talented Stratum five-year-old was second best in betting for the $358,000 Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on Saturday, her first run over further than a mile since winning the ATC Oaks as a three-year-old back in 2012.

She handled the distance and the Heavy (8) Gold Coast track well however to beat home the Ciaron Maher-trained roughie Mr O’Ceirin and Bart Cummings’ veteran stayer Precedence for her first win of the year.

Backing up from a fourth in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) in Sydney two weeks earlier, Streama hadn’t raced in Queensland since last year’s Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

She enjoyed a strong season then with two Group 1 minor placings.

The first was a third behind Linton in the Stradbroke before her second behind Chris Waller’s fellow Sydney mare Red Tracer in the Tattersall’s Tiara both run over 1400m.

This season however Walter will run her over further for a shot at the $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2020m) on May 17.

A winner of nine of her 33 career starts now for over $2.3 million in prize money, Streama is likely to be retired at the end of this prep.

Walter then is keener than ever to bag one more big trophy, the Warwick Farm-based horseman hoping that comes at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday week.

“She’s had a great career. She’s such a brave mare,” he told The Sunday Mail.

“She’s won three Group 1 races and deserves a go at a fourth.

“Don’t forget she’s won from 1200 to 2400m and has won an AJC Oaks.

“The mare’s racing days are numbered. She can’t have too much racing left.

“Let’s hope we get a Doomben Cup under the belt before the owners send her to stud.”

There are officially 27 horses heading towards this year’s Doomben Cup field, Streama now the favourite of those in the markets after her Hollindale victory.

It is mixed form from that race however due to the bog track, beaten favourite Junoob running fourth but far from disgraced with jockey Nash Rawiller blaming their defeat on the muddy conditions.

“He just didn’t handle the track at all,” Rawiller said.

Latest Doomben Cup odds have Streama at $4 while Waller’s six-year-old import Junoob is still well in the mix as the $5 second pick.

Following closely on the third line of Doomben Cup betting at $5.50 is then Akzar who won the Warrnambool Cup on Thursday for trainer Darren Weir.

The bookies are then taking no chances with unlikely acceptor Leebaz, the Hawkes-trained Zabeel four-year-old at $7 after winning the Hawkesbury Cup over the mile on Saturday.

Rounding out the single figure Doomben Cup chances is then surprise Doomben Cup runner-up Mr O’Ceirin at $7.50 who relished the rain affected ground on the weekend.

Their jockey on the weekend Glen Boss isn’t writing them off to turn the tables Saturday week either, saying the fast pace of the Cup was what got them beaten on the Gold Coast.

“My worst fear going into the race was that it would be a solid speed and that’s what they served up,” Boss said when speaking about his ride for second in the Hollindale.

“He’s not quite there yet and was still a bit fresh.

“He’s the one you want going forward. All of the others have had five or six runs and he was only second-up.”

Other notable hopes in the top half of the markets then include Waller’s Hollindale fifth placegetter Moriarty ($11), the Kris Lees-trained O’Reilly filly Hera ($14), JRA Plate third placed Slow Pace ($16) and Kiwi raider Scapolo ($17) yet to race down under.
