Mr O’Ceirin opened at Hollindale Stakes odds as long as $18, but has been extremely well-backed in the past 24 hours after a heavy storm hit the Gold Coast and saw the track downgraded to a heavy eight.

The Postponed gelding will be having his first race start in Queensland in the Hollindale Stakes and trainer Ciaron Maher hopes that it will be the start of a successful 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival campaign for the six-year-old.

“These Queensland races really appeal to where he sits with distance and ratings,” Maher told News Limited.

“We thought Sydney would be pretty tough so we decided to go fresh into Brisbane and I was also mindful of the tracks; he appreciates the give in the ground.

“On the firmer tracks he starts to get trouble with his feet and hopefully up there he can sustain a campaign.”

Mr O’Ceirin returned to the races with an 11th place finish in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield on April 19 and has an excellent second-up record; scoring a dominant three and a half lengths win in the Printhouse Graphics Handicap (2040m) in the second race start of his 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign.

Maher said that he was happy with the first-up run of Mr O’Ceirin and believes that he is in excellent physical condition of the Grafton Cup winner heading into the Hollindale Stakes.

“Normally I run him over a mile and then 2000m second up,” Maher said.

“I get him very fit before I take him to the races and his first few runs are normally his best.

“First up was a great run and he was just looking for somewhere to go in the final furlong.

“He’s going to be somewhere in the mix.”
