Dothraki Runs Well to Claim 2014 Gold Coast Guineas

Exciting three-year-old Dothraki has maintained a strong sprint in the final straight to win the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) this afternoon, beating a fast-finishing Safeguard in a photo finish; Palmera Lad running on to claim third.

Jumping from the gates well, the Mossman colt settled in prime position on the heels of early leaders Whiskey Allround and Enquare, who set a noticeably fast tempo rounding onto the final straight.

Hugging the rails and cutting the corner to shoot to the front, Dothraki pulled a near-three length lead 200 metres from the post, but noticeably tired and was lucky to deliver trainer Gerald Ryan the card’s final title.

Registering a fourth career victory in claiming the 2014 Gold Coast Guineas, Dothraki has also continued a sensational run of form over his current preparation.

Returning to the track with a strong run to finish third amongst classy company in the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) first-up on April 6th, the colt out of Volantis was unlucky when blocked for a run in the early stages of the final straight in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) on April 19th, but recovered to claim fifth in a fanning finish similar to this afternoon’s Gold Coast Guineas.

A favourite amongst punters in the moments leading up to the Group 3 race, Safeguard exploded from the pack to finish an unlucky second, but succeeded in overturning a disappointing run for last in the Royal Sovereign last time out.

Claiming a total of three wins and three places from just 10 competitive starts, Safeguard was a standout performer over an impressive 2013 spring preparation; claiming the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) first-up and finishing an unlucky second in the Blue Sapphire (1200m) most notably.

Completing his final run under trainer Peter Snowden, who was confirmed to part ways with the Darley Syndicate following today’s events, the Exceed And Excel colt will continue north to Brisbane to contest several major events over the Brisbane Winter racing Carnival, including the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m).

Without doubt the surprise packet in finishing third, Palmera Lad jumped as a rank $26 outsider for success in the 2014 Gold Coast Guineas, but displayed a keen turn of foot to finish just half a length in the red.
