Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
There are just eight gallopers in the mix for the 2014 Euclase Stakes at Morphettville this weekend but the South Australian Derby Day is still shaping up as a top sprint showdown worth a punt on.
The track has firmed into the Dead range in Adelaide ahead of this weekend’s majors making for a top day’s racing including the $250,000 Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m) running as Race 6 at 2:24pm (AEST).
Originally the race, known this year as the Sportingbet Stakes, drew nine final acceptors but there’s already been an early withdrawal with David Hayes scratching Fast ‘N’ Rocking.
Euclase Stakes odds then are led by Robbie Griffiths’ last start Caulfield winner The Quarterback out to stake their claims for a shot at the Group 1 The Goodwood back at the track and distance Saturday week.
Another The Goodwood nominee is then hot on the heels of The Quarterback in Euclase Stakes betting with Daniel Clarken’s locally-trained Blue Diamond winner Miracles Of Life looking for a nearly-end-of-career win here.
Others in the mix at single figures are then the Phillip Stokes-trained Éclair Big Bang, Danerich gelding Classy Jack and Stokes’ other hope Lucky Symbol.
With such a small field and so many live wire chances then who do you pick to win?
#5 Lucky Symbol ($8)
We’re tipping an upset Euclase Stakes result here and think Phillip Stokes’ local Magnus gelding is improving enough to score their maiden stakes win here. They’ve won four of six so far, finishing third in their other two runs, so have the consistency and will to win. Took out a Bendigo 1000m Benchmark 70 two back before coming back home for the Redelva Stakes on April 12 when third to Minaj, an effort they’ll improve on here going up to the 1200m for the first time fresh.
#8 Miracles Of Life ($3.40)
She’s on the way out of her racing career but can Miracles Of Life put in a big run to win her likely swansong? She’s come close at her last two starts finishing runner-up in both the Listed Manihi Stakes and the Redelva last time out here, she’s a Group 1 winner as a juvenile last year so no doubts about what she’s capable of and the money is coming for her. Think it’ll be a close call with little separating the top three.
#4 The Quarterback ($3.20)
Favourite here and a top fancy for next weekend’s The Goodwood but while they’ve got class they have to prove themselves at Morphettville yet. Cranbourne-based son of Street Boss won at Caulfield over 1200m last time out and also has two Group 3 thirds from earlier in the season so has a big run in them for sure.
