Visitors Raid Gold Coast Guineas 2014 Final Field

A bumper field of three-year-olds has been accepted for the 2014 Gold Coast Guineas in Queensland this Saturday with a host of classy interstate raiders looking to steal the early winter feature from the locals.

Rounding out the AD Hollindale Stakes Day action as Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEST) on Saturday afternoon, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Attwood Marshall Lawyers Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) features a capacity field of 21 acceptors.

Only 16 of those are assured of a start leaving five emergencies awaiting a scratching to gain a start.

Heading the Gold Coast Guineas field as the top rated runner is the Peter Snowden-trained Sydney visitor Safeguard out to improve second-up after a failed resuming run back home.

The Exceed And Excel colt won their opening three starts, including a Group 3 double with Randwick’s Kindergarten Stakes and Caulfield’s Vain Stakes, as a two-year-old last year.

They had a number of other good runs before spending four months on the sidelines at the start of this year.

Returning on April 19 in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) they had a luckless run and the pressure got to them with Safeguard running dead last behind Sidestep, an effort Snowden is hoping they can atone for here.

The other big name Sydney runner in the mix here is the Gerald Ryan-trained Dothraki, a Nash Rawiller mount drawn ideally in barrier five.

Mossman colt Dothraki also comes into the Guineas via a Royal Sovereign Stakes run where the stakes winner ran a good fifth in on the back of a third in the Gosford Guineas in the mud from April 6.

There’s plenty of Queensland-trained talent vying for the Gold Coast Guineas win this year too, a number of which are resuming here.

Some of the top first-up runners include last start Eagle Farm winner over the mile Palmera Lad, the Kelly Schweida-trained L’Entrecote who runs for the first time since a 1350m win at Doomben in early Decembersmart Stratum filly and Enquare for the Sunshine Coast’s Jason McLachlan.

Enquare has won five of her 10 starts to date and looks one of the best performed in this field with a Group 3 win already under her belt.

She was in flying form during her summer campaign winning the Listed Mode Plate (1200m) at Doomben before a return to the track on December 28 for a victory over Gundy Spirit in the Group 3 Vo Rouge Plate (1350m).

Enquare also has form here on the Gold Coast having finished a brave third last time out on January 11 behind Sweet Idea (1st) and Estonian Princess (2nd) in the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m).

As for those with a run already under their belt in the lead-up some of the best performed include the Kim Craft-trained Natural Dancer in gate two who won over 1000m at Eagle Farm on April 19 and another last start winner Total Authority coming off a Toowoomba victory.

Other notable hopes meanwhile include the Tony Gollan-trained Whiskey Allround with Group 2 form at Flemington, Kelso Wood’s returning Golden Rose failure Into The Red to be ridden by Chris Munce and Kiwi raider Costa Viva for Matamata-based Jason Bridgman.

Encosta De Lago filly Costa Viva debuts down under here after top form back home including their Group 1 NZ 1000 Guineas (1600m) victory back in November.

This year they’ve had just the one run back in late January when third in the Group 3 Desert Gold (1600m), so look a big chance to match it with the Aussies over this distance.
