South Australian Derby 2014 Betting Update

Last weekend’s VRC St Ledger winner Order Of The Sun continues to head the 2014 South Australian Derby betting markets for this Saturday’s Morphettville Group 1 but is easing favourite for the classic.

Gai Waterhouse’s Encosta De Lago colt broke a three month drought with their big seven length romp in the Listed VRC St Ledger over 2800m at Flemington last Friday.

Now they are top fancy to make it two from two when backing up in the $500,000 Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) this Saturday, a class rise again for the Sydney Group 1 performer.

They’ve lost some fanfare from the punters ahead of their Derby bid however easing out from $3.60 to $3.80 to add a Group 1 to their record with a likely Heavy track working against them.

Also easing out in the South Australian Derby odds is the second pick Bring Something ($4.50 – $4.80).

Ken Keys’ smart Sebring gelding has won their past two on the trot and has been building up to this staying showdown with wins over 2025m at Cranbourne and then 2400m when winning the Listed Galilee Series Final at Caulfield last time out.

They’re yet to see a Heavy track but are proven on Slow ground with a win and a second from their two starts on a soft course.

The other notable drifter is then last weekend’s Group 2 Chairman’s Stakes winner Gamblin’ Guru ($8 – $8.50) who has the far outside barrier but form on rain affected tracks.

The big South Australian Derby market mover meanwhile is the Michael Kent-trained Cranbourne based filly Scratchy Bottom.

The daughter of Sebring was at $10 when the SA Derby field and markets were released yesterday but has since been heavily backed into $7.

She’s on the seven day turnaround like Gamblin’ Guru after running at the track last weekend, and history shows the race she comes via has turned out a South Australian Derby winner or two in recent years.

Scratchy Bottom made her Adelaide debut here in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) and put in a big run to finish third behind May’s Dream, an effort she’s tipped to improve on this weekend going up in distance.
