Held on Stradbroke Handicap Day at Eagle Farm Racecourse on June 7, this year’s $500,000 Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) attracted 82 two-year-olds at nomination stage.

Last season Sydney’s Gai Waterhouse broke a six-year-old Group 1 Brisbane drought to take out the JJ Atkins with her Northern Meteor gelding Romantic Touch, and she’s back this year with a bumper 14 early entries.

Among the Waterhouse contingent are the likes of Al Maher gelding Almalad who won their debut at Gosford in December, More Than Ready colt Sun Force who has had two runs including a last start second in February and unraced Flying Spur colt Skylimit.

One of the best performed JJ Atkins nominee at this stage is Gold Coast galloper Aimee for Noel Doyle.

The Exceedingly Good filly has had five starts for a trio of wins having saluted at Doomben, Eagle Farm and most recently the Gold Coast over 1110m to 1300m.

There are also a few JJ Atkins hopes this year that are already Group 1 performed include the David Hayes-trained Sydney galloper Zululand.

From their six starts to date the Fastnet Rock colt already boasts a Group 2 win and Group 1 minor placing making them a top chance for a big winter run.

On the back of a ninth to Earthquake in this year’s Blue Diamond Stakes they went to Flemington over 1400m and scored a solid victory in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes.

From there two more Group 1 followed, a fifth to Peggy Jean in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and then up over a mile for their brave second behind Go Indy Go in the Champagne Stakes last weekend.

Hayes has also nominated for seven other youngsters including fellow Fastnet Rock colt Randarock who debuted at Caulfield on April 19 and a son of Encosta De Lago Red Sun Rising who has had two provincial starts so far.

Another two-year-old that ran well in this year’s ATC Sires Produce in the wet who has the JJ Atkins in their sights is the Gerald Ryan-trained Time For War.

The Snitzel colt won two from two including their Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill in March before their fourth in the Group 1 from April 12.

Ryan has three other JJ Atkins entries with Aesop, Brazen Moss and Raise A Red.

As for other local Queensland hopes one of the top chances looks to be Bryan Guy’s Gold Coast runner Stroak, the Real Saga filly with form around some good horses.

She won her opening two at Doomben and then went up to Group 3 company when second to Unencumbered in the BJ McLachlan in December.

At her latest start she raced in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic this time running fifth to BJ McLachlan winner Unencumbered who posted another feature win.

The other chances for Guy are previous Doomben winning Denman filly Grapevine and Castanita.

Other notable JJ Atkins nominations taken this season include BJ McLachlan third placegetter Sagatona, the Gary Portelli-trained More Than Ready gelding Next Level and the Darley-owned Exceed And Excel colt Mohave.

Trained by John O’Shea, Mohave has had four runs to date including a Listed Blue Diamond Preview win in January and a sixth in the Blue Diamond Stakes back in February.

The complete JJ Atkins 2014 nominations are listed below, late nominations closing on Friday.
