Spillway Scores Maiden Australian Win In JRA Plate

Imported galloper Spillway showed an impressive turn-of-foot to record his maiden Australian race win in the 2014 JRA Plate at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Spillway will be set for the Caulfield Cup during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival after recording an impressive win in the 2014 JRA Plate at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Spillway has performed well in his two race starts in Australia, finishing seventh in the Listed Golden Mile (1600m) at Bendigo on March 15 and the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens on April 5, and took advantage off a hot early tempo to storm down the outside of the field.

Trainer David Hayes said that after walking the track he thought that it would be an advantage to settle Spillway towards the tail of the field, a decision that clearly paid dividends, and he is hoping that the win is enough to improve the rating of the Rail Link entire, who he hopes will be a Caulfield Cup horse during the 2014 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

“We walked the track this morning and I just felt that by the meeting coming down the outside might work and I think that he was flattered by superior ground out there,” Hayes said.

“We are hoping that he is a Caulfield Cup horse and his rating is 88 and it has always been a bit of a concern for the spring, so hopefully that will get him into the 100s now and we will be able to set him up.”

Kerrin McEvoy, who won the Golden Whip award , was happy to finish the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival with a win and, like Hayes, believes that the better ground on the outside of the track played a key role in the win of Spillway in the 2014 JRA Plate.

“After a frustrating day it is nice to get a winner,” McEvoy said.

“His first run was quiet good at Bendigo and Craig said to David that he didn’t enjoy the soft ground last time at Rosehill.

“His record suggests that dry ground suits and today we were able to sit back and relax.

“There was a nice tempo in front and he travelled supremely well and he was full of running once I turned for home.

“He got out to some unused ground and he felt great.

“He is obviously a nice staying animal for the future.”
