Driefontein Records Impressive Victory in 2014 Robert Sangster Stakes

Talented mare Driefontein has led from start to finish to comfortably win the major Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville Racecourse this afternoon ahead of a fast finishing Platelet and Gregers.

Jumping particularly well, the Fastnet Rock mare set a strong early tempo, pulling a length clear of Gregers and autumn performer A Time For Julia.

Rounding the bend in prime position, Driefontein continued to find, hitting top gear at the 200 metre mark and sealing the victory 100 metres from home.

Representative in Adelaide for trainer Gai Waterhouse, Roger Elliot was pleased Driefontein was able to close out an impressive run in style in the 2014 Robert Sangster Classic.

“She tries all the time and was great today” Elliot said after the race.

“She races well like that; she relaxed pretty well so it was great.”

Claiming a maiden title at the highest level of Australian racing in the 2014 Robert Sangster, Elliot outlined the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) on May 10th as the next target for Driefontein this time in.

“She’s been doing really well at Flemington and may come back in a couple of weeks’ time” Elliot added.

Jockey Vlad Duric delivered another sensational ride on Driefontein in the Robert Sangster, and revealed he had to re-assess his plan from that which delivered a strong victory in the Group 3 Irwin Stakes (1100m) last time out on April 12th.

”She jumped really well and I was going to be more than happy to find one or two to follow like I did the other day” Duric said after claiming only his fifth Group 1 title.

“With my wide draw no one wanted to go, and I just thought she’s won races doing it from start to finish so I just bit the bullet and went forward with her and just banked that I was on the best horse, and I was.

“I just made sure from the 600 I started to build on her and I just let her gallop.

“Just knowing how Gai trains her horses; she trains them to be bullet-proof and rock-hard fit and I rode her that way.”

An appearance in The Goodwood is likely to draw to an end an impressive preparation, which has now delivered four wins from eight competitive starts.
