2014 Champagne Stakes Results – Go Indy Go Storms Home Late

South Australian-trained filly Go Indy Go stormed home late to record an impressive victory in the 2014 Champagne Stakes at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Go Indy Go flashed down the outside of the field to score her maiden win at Group 1 level in the 2014 Champagne Stakes at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Go Indy Go was settled towards the tail of the field by jockey Chad Schofield and the rising young hoop rode the talented filly patiently before swinging her wide coming around the final turn.

The Bernardini filly responded well when asked for an extra effort and raced down the outside of the track to score her maiden win at Group 1 level from a gallant Zululand and Darley-owned Kumaon.

Trainer Leon Macdonald has always had a high opinion of Go Indy Go and after her 2014 Champagne Stakes victory believes that she may be the best horse that he has ever trained.

“She is very impressive,” Macdonald said.

“Young Chad was very confident before the race and he rode her accordingly and gave her a brilliant run.

“She relished the mile.

“She is right up the top and I have always though that.

“I didn’t want to say it before today and she looks like a typical Oaks horse.”

Schofield was riding in the Champagne Stakes for the first time in his racing career and, just like he did in both the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) and Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m), took advantage of the opportunity and recorded another feature race win.

“It is fantastic; it is obviously Group 1 number three today and it was such an impressive victory,” Schofield said.

“She was at the tail of the field in a muddling run race and a lot of horses were on the bridle pulling, but she was just in a nice rhythm.

“Around the turn Peggy Jean whipped around me and I popped onto her back and as soon as I balanced her up to straighten and asked her to quicken she did exactly that and she put a good field away very easily.

“It was an incredibly dominant win and she was very well prepared today by Leon Macdonald and I am so grateful to him and the owners for the opportunity.

“They now have a very nice filly on their hands.”
