Mick Price’s Melbourne raider Tango’s Daughter has opened clear favourite to make it three on the trot, and two straight at the track, with a win in the Queen Of the South Stakes 2014 at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide on the weekend.
There are 14 fillies and mares set to face off in this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) which accompanies two Group 1 features on the South Australian race card on Saturday.
Five of those are under double figures in the latest Queen Of The South Stakes odds to win, the favourite being Tango’s Daughter at $3.30.
Drawn in gate nine with Dean Yendall to ride she gets into the set weights plus penalties showdown on just 53.5kg and backs up from a last start win at Morphettville Parks from April 12.
There she won the Listed H C Nitschke Stakes (1400m) by a length, Yendall aboard there as well, in an effort the bookies are tipping the up-and-comer to repeat as she goes up in class here.
The other single figure Queen Of The South Stakes chances out for an upset are then:
- #4 Golden Penny ($7) – Wide barrier 12 draw but time to overcome that for Richard Jolly’s local Blevic mare who comes off a nice second to Maybe Discreet in the Listed City Of Adelaide Handicap (1400m) from a fortnight ago when carrying 58.5kg, drops back to 56.5kg here and is a chance to turn the tables over more distance here
- #3 Floria ($7.50) – Another Melbourne visitor this one prepared by Peter Moody, the Savabeel six-year-old has gate four and Luke Nolen in the saddle as she runs in Adelaide for the first time following some disappointing autumn runs in Melbourne and Sydney, last start seventh to Catkins in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes on a Heavy (8) and a firmer track will suit as well an easier field of rivals
- #1 Maybe Discreet ($8) – Phillip Stokes’ talented Shamardal four-year-old comes off a last start win in the City Of Adelaide Handicap second-up for the season, end of prep form last time was terrible but is capable of more as shown there and indications are she’ll like the mile
- #10 Double Dee ($9) – Outside draw for this super consistent Jason Warren-trained Dubelo mare from Mornington, she’s run top three in her past seven starts most recently finishing runner-up to May’s Dream at Moonee Valley over 1523m form March 29, the mile is her pet distance but is a notable class rise here in a new state so they’re two hurdles to overcome
Others in the mix at more generous Queen Of The South Stakes odds then include the Anthony Freedman-trained Group performing Red Ransom mare Kazanluck ($11) drawn well in gate two, Stella Lante ($12) coming off a third to Maybe Discreet in the City Of Adelaide Handicap and possible improver in the field Vivi Veloce ($13) from Seymour.
