Peter Moody will saddle up the top fancy for the aptly named Anzac Day Stakes 2014 at Flemington on Friday with Easy Drama having just their second career start.
One of two Black Types on the Melbourne race card this ANZAC Day, the $120,000 Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1410m) is set to run as Flemington Race 2 at 1:35pm (local).
The two-year-olds’ feature has attracted a capacity field of acceptors too with 16 confirmed starters plus four emergencies.
The early scratching of the Mick Price-trained Pressing who drew the second widest gate though has paved the way for the first emergency Nozomi ($21) to gain a start.
Meanwhile the favourite is out wide in gate 15, the Real Saga colt paying $5 in the latest Anzac Day Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au to remain undefeated following a win on debut last time out.
That was over 1200m at Flemington three weeks ago, their form there suggesting the step up to 1400m will suit even from the nasty barrier.
Despite the big field, the fact there’s so little form on these youngsters has seen just two others open under $10 to win.
The first of those is the best tried in the field, the Robbie Griffiths-trained Not A Single Doubt filly Singularity ($7) having her eighth start here.
She remains a maiden but has run second at her two most recent runs, including behind Easy Drama last time out in the $180,000 VOBIS Gold Ingot from April 5.
Third pick at $7.50 is then the second emergency Divan from the stables of Robert Hickmott who needs just one more withdrawal to line-up.
If they do it’ll be from a gun gate two draw with multiple Group 1 winning hoop Chad Schofield in the saddle for the New Zealand-bred Zabeel colt’s debut run.
The next best in betting are then the Michael Moroney-trained Merion ($10) coming off a debut win at Bendigo from last month, Peter Snowden’s market mover Alaska ($12) with the inside alley as they look to break their maiden status at start number four and the Peter Moody-trained Fastnet Rock colt Armada ($13) drawn at the opposite end of the field out in the car park.
Also in the mix with claims for an upset are then the likes of Tale Of The Cat gelding Felarof ($14) coming off a good second to Go Indy Go in the Group 3 Sires Produce (1400m) in Adelaide, Royal Standing ($14) who was also last seen running in a Group 3 at Morphettville when fifth in the Breeders Stakes from March 29, the David Hayes-trained Duck Dynasty ($14) second-up after debuting in the St Albans Stakes at Moonee Valley when fifth last month and Jarklin ($15).
