Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Brad Rawiller has been booked to ride early favourite Platelet in Saturday’s Robert Sangster Stakes 2014 in Adelaide, the fifth jockey change for the Darren Weir-trained mare in as many starts and the third ‘confirmed’ booking for her weekend assault.
The Strategic five-year-old is one of 14 sprinters making up the field for this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes Sportingbet Classic (1200m) at Morphettville on the weekend, and is the early pick to win in a classy line-up.
Twelve months ago during last year’s Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival Platelet was in flying form, backing up from a second in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) at fortnight earlier to win the Robert Sangster.
She also went on another two weeks after that to make it a Group 1 double with a triumphant end-of-season run in The Goodwood at the same track and distance with Ben Melham aboard.
Platelet is back to defend her Robert Sangster Stakes title on Saturday and comes via the same lead-up run, the champ having won first-up at Moonee Valley before a second this year behind the Gai Waterhouse-trained RN Irwin Stakes winner Driefontein.
Michelle Payne and Ben Melham shared the riding honours on Platelet last prep, and this year she’s already had two jockey changes most recently Damian Lane aboard for the Irwin Stakes.
Lane, originally set to continue his streak with Platelet, is without a Robert Sangster ride however after copping a 24-meeting ban at Caulfield last Saturday.
His replacement was then announced as Payne, however she too will miss the mount due to a suspension from Monday.
Connections then have finally secured a rider putting Rawiller aboard Platelet for the Group 1, the well fancied duo to jump from barrier five.
Rawiller has dual Group 1 rides at the South Australian meeting too also booked for Weir’s promising filly May’s Dream in the $400,000 Australasian Oaks (2000m).
Other top chances in Saturday’s Robert Sangster include a trio of interstate raiders with last start Flemington winner Shamal Wind (4), Group 1 performer Gregers (10) and RN Irwin winner Driefontein (11).
