2014 Schweppes Oaks Odds – Top Two Hard to Split

This Saturday in Adelaide a talented line-up of three-year-old fillies will face off in the Schweppes Oaks 2014, betting markets on the classic a tight battle between a widely drawn duo.

Girl In Flight

Girl In Flight currently leads the betting fight for top spot in the markets for this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2000m), the Robbie Griffiths-trained Commands grey at $4 to make it two on the trot at Morphettville Racecourse.

Hot on her heels in the Oaks odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is then May’s Dream at $4.20 who jumps from 15, two outside of Girl In Flight also out wide in barrier 13.

While historically a mid-field Australasian Oaks barrier draw is advantageous, six winners jumping from gate eight since 1983, the wider barriers have not been without their champions as well.

The bookies then are taking no chances on the two top rated runners in the mix, especially after Girl In Flight and the Darren Weir-trained May’s Dream ran first and third in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m) last time out on April 12.

Despite the bumper 16 starter, two emergency Schweppes Oaks field there is just one other filly under double figures in the latest markets to win with Scratchy Bottom paying $6.

Another interstate raider, Michael Kent’s Sebring filly Scratchy Bottom debuts in South Australia here following some nice form back home in Melbourne.

Her most recent effort was in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2050m) at Moonee Valley on March 14 where she ran fifth to Pheidon, an effort she’ll likely improve on having now been up over the trip.

Just outside the dominant trio are a number of other live wire Oaks hopes at more generous prices including David Hayes’ Street Cry filly Star Fashion coming off a fourth to Gamblin’ Guru in the Port Adelaide Guineas over the 1800m here on April 12 and Peter Moody’s Auraria Stakes runner-up  In Masquerade at $10 each.

Two others are then under $20 with Craig Williams’ mount Rezoned ($15) and another from Moody’s Melbourne stables Lady Tatia ($14) drawn well in gate two as she steps up in class and distance here after a Benchmark 70 at Sandown at the start of the month where she ran second over 1700m behind Tear Gas.
