Down in class this weekend if accepted, John O’Shea’s Group 1 performing gelding Savvy Nature is the top rated nominee for Saturday’s Frank Packer Plate 2014.
A three-year-old set weights clash running at Royal Randwick on the weekend, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) drew 13 nominations.
Heading those early entries is Savabeel three-year-old Savvy Nature who comes off two Group 1 fourth place finishes this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival behind Criterion in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and then the ATC Derby (2400m).
The Derby was run on a Heavy Randwick track on April 12, Savvy Nature to appreciate the drop back in distance and likely firmer track for the Frank Packer.
“Savvy Nature ran super, he ran right up to his best and that is all you can ask for,” O’Shea told The Daily Telegraph when speaking of his Derby performance.
“The Frank Packer Plate against his own age group…that will give him the chance to finish his season with a good win.”
Also coming off a solid ATC Derby run is the John Thompson-trained Hooked who shares a 96 handicap rating with Savvy Nature.
The Casino Prince colt finished third when stepped up to the mile and a half for the Derby on the back of a fifth in both the Randwick and Rosehill Guineas.
The other headline Frank Packer Plate nominee is then the David Vandyke-trained Arabian Gold.
The smart grey Dubawi filly is one three last start winners in the mix having taken out the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes over this same track and distance from April 12.
After bypassing last weekend’s Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) and Queen Elizabeth, the Frank Packer has become the end-of-carnival focus for Arabian Gold with connections keen for her to make a name for herself in the race the way Might And Power (2007) did for their maiden stakes win.
There’s a chance that, all going well, Arabian Gold will then head to Brisbane for the winter riches.
“We are also looking at a Brisbane campaign for Arabian Gold,” Vandyke confirmed to AAP.
“There are a lot of options for her.”
Also looking to go back-to-back in Saturday’s Frank Packer are then Takewing who won at Kensington on April 16 and recent Hawkesbury winner in the wet Our Uncle Archie.
Gai Waterhouse meanwhile has three entries with her Alister Clark winner over this distance at Moonee Valley from last month Pheidon, Equator and Liberty’s Choice.
Also with multiple chances is Peter Snowden with Street Cry colt Shikra and Teofilo gelding Malice.
