Sidestep Storms Home To Win 2014 Royal Sovereign Stakes

Talented colt Sidestep overcame a poor start to fly home late and score a most impressive victory in the 2014 Royal Sovereign Stakes at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Sidestep was slow out of the gates and jockey Kerrin McEvoy was forced to settle the Exceed And Excel colt towards the tail of the field and the three-year-old looked as though he was going to be blocked for a run in the final stages of the racing.

Kiwi filly Bounding looked like the winner when she kicked clear from the rest of the field at the 200 metre mark, but Sidestep finally found clearing running and leapt out of the ground late to record his second win at Group 2 level.

Trainer Peter Snowden admitted that nothing went to plan during the running of the 2014 Royal Sovereign Stakes, but was delighted with the result and is thrilled to see Sidestep back to the form that he showed when he finished second in the 2013 Golden Slipper.

“I wasn’t worried,” Snowden joked after the race.

“We had a lot work to do and it wasn’t in the script to be there at all; we wanted to be positive and have him up on the speed from the good draw today, but he was slow out and everything went pear shaped.

“He didn’t panic, he bided his time and rode for luck and he was good enough to get up.

“This preparation he has been getting back to his two-year-old form and he wanted to attack the line well today.”

McEvoy admitted that his race plan went out the window when Sidestep was slow out of the gates, but was thrilled with the acceleration that the three-year-old was able to show in the final stages of the race.

“Pete wanted us to be a bit closer and if he had jumped well we might have been, but he can step a bit slow which he did today,” McEvoy said.

“I had to ride him to settle and finish and he obviously has a good motor and he has down that well.

“He has been running great with big weights and today he showed that he is fantastic in his finish and it gave me a great thrill.”

Sidestep has now recorded two wins from three starts this preparation after resuming with a narrow defeat in the Listed Fireball Stakes (1100m) at Royal Randwick on March 15 before taking out the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 29.
