Green Moon Primed for 2014 Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Prominent owner Lloyd Williams has declared 2012 Melbourne Cup champion Green Moon will line up in this afternoon’s major Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on day 2 of the inaugural The Championships in peak condition.

While unable to find the finishing line in the clear in any of his proceeding starts, Williams said the Montjeu entire has worked well since his last appearance for second in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m), and is primed to run a memorable race.

“He’s as good as we had him in 2012 going into the Turnbull and subsequently going into the Melbourne Cup” Williams told RSN this week.

“He’s in great order. I think he’ll run well.”

Confirmed to be partnered by Hugh Bowman for this first time in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Williams said he was confident the in-form jockey will get this best from his horse this afternoon.

“He’s my favourite jockey in the world, Hughie Bowman, so he’ll know what to do with him even though he has never ridden him” Williams added.

Amassing an impressive record of seven wins and four places from only 28 competitive race starts to date, Green Moon began his career under the guidance of leading European trainer Harry Dunlop before transferring to the care of Robert Hickmott at Williams’ Macedon Lodge stables at the conclusion of his 2010 preparation.

Steadily building to the task in his maiden Australian preparation in the spring of 2011, Green Moon claimed the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) before finishing an unlucky second to Southern Speed in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).

Returning to the track in arguably career best form in 2012, Green Moon claimed a strong maiden Group 1 victory in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) before strolling home to win the Race the Stops a Nation by more than a length.

Producing a strong turn of foot to finish fourth amongst classy company in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) first-up this time in, Green Moon was unlucky to be hunted down in the final 100 metres by 2013 Melbourne Cup Champion Fiorente in the Australian Cup last time out.

Allocated the reason barrier 8 for this afternoon’s feature race, Green Moon is currently offered at particularly generous odds of $21 for success in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Having returned to the track in typically competitive form in 2014, four-time Group 1 champion It’s A Dundeel is currently offered as outright favourite and clear market mover at $3.60 odds in Queen Elizabeth Stakes betting markets, ahead of Silent Achiever ($4.60), Carlton House ($5.50) and Royal Descent ($8). is currently offering the best odds on all four Group 1 races at Royal Randwick today, including the Queen Elizabeth Stakes!
