Prominent owner Lloyd Williams has declared 2012 Melbourne Cup champion Green Moon will line up in this afternoon’s major Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on day 2 of the inaugural The Championships in peak condition.
While unable to find the finishing line in the clear in any of his proceeding starts, Williams said the Montjeu entire has worked well since his last appearance for second in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m), and is primed to run a memorable race.
“He’s as good as we had him in 2012 going into the Turnbull and subsequently going into the Melbourne Cup” Williams told RSN this week.
“He’s in great order. I think he’ll run well.”
Confirmed to be partnered by Hugh Bowman for this first time in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Williams said he was confident the in-form jockey will get this best from his horse this afternoon.
“He’s my favourite jockey in the world, Hughie Bowman, so he’ll know what to do with him even though he has never ridden him” Williams added.
Amassing an impressive record of seven wins and four places from only 28 competitive race starts to date, Green Moon began his career under the guidance of leading European trainer Harry Dunlop before transferring to the care of Robert Hickmott at Williams’ Macedon Lodge stables at the conclusion of his 2010 preparation.
Steadily building to the task in his maiden Australian preparation in the spring of 2011, Green Moon claimed the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) before finishing an unlucky second to Southern Speed in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).
